My Role Build an internal wiki page to house information needed by multiple departments Have general description of role of services offered by each department Assist in efficiently finding errors within databases of customer information
Problem Improve OneAmerica’s internship program What parts of the program is the company currently doing well in? What is being done poorly or should be changed for the program? How can OneAmerica improve the internship program?
Gathering Information Who has been through the program? Have their been any changes? Who runs the program? How are resources distributed? What are OneAmerica’s goals for the new program? What would current interns change about the program?
Human Resources Previous success of the program Number of Applicants Current information outlets about opening at OneAmerica
Former Interns Two returning interns Contacted early Had work Preassigned to them Hired two interns from previous internship (H. Evans, Interview June 15th, 2009)
Supervisors Spoke with managers What changes would they prefer? Chief Information Officer Increase hiring of interns to six per year Prepare for a transition of work force (E. Talley, Interview June 22nd, 2009)
Current Interns Noticed lack of structure and consistency Many were unaware of company and program Unprepared to have interns interact with multiple departments Minimal exposure to wide variety of students
Analyzing Options Focus only on OneAmerica’s goal of what was working well with the program, what was done poorly, and needed to be improved? Send in all our gathered information sorted by priority Group common issues and present them to Human Resources, CIO, and supervisors. Not do anything
Best Alternative Present all our gathered information to Human Resources, CIO, and supervisors. Most recurring theme in our findings was a lack of structure or coordination Provide all groups involved in the internship process an opportunity to see potential improvements
Solution Sort all of our gathered information into a investigation report of the current program Submit that report to all parties involved with the internship program Present a condensed version to the same individuals
Benefits Hope to incorporate all these areas to better understand the role or future of the program Be more prepared for next set of interns Make changes where possible
Review Problem: How can OneAmerica improve its current internship program? Solution: Create detailed report of findings, and set up shortened presentation of findings Benefits: Increase the effectiveness and productivity of interns’ time at OneAmerica
