The Campsite Rule - Leaving the Tech Industry Better Than We Found ItKristine Howard
Closing locknote delivered at the DDD Perth conference on September 16, 2017.
Improving the codebase for the next developer is a great goal, but what about making the industry better for the next generation? In this talk, Kris will debunk some of the damaging myths and ideas we’re all guilty of perpetuating, the ones that lead to stress and burnout. Fortunately there is an antidote - becoming a mentor! You’ll learn how you can change your own behaviour and thinking, be more supportive to those just starting out, and feel more engaged and inspired in your work - all with minimal effort. We all have a responsibility to make things just a little bit better for those who come after us.
This document provides information about Wi-Fi access and hashtags for an event called the NCCE Makerspace Summit, along with quotes and ideas about creativity, innovation, education, and making things. Some key points include:
- The Wi-Fi network name and password for the event.
- Hashtags to use for the event on social media.
- Quotes about the importance of starting projects, taking risks, and creating new solutions.

- Steps individuals can take to develop ideas and bring them to reality through perseverance.
We all know that people are more than the sum of their social media profiles. But if you’re serious about making a living by creating content and gaining sponsors, what you put out on your social channels is how you’ll be judged. In this live-fire exercise, Brad Rodriguez will select the social profiles of actual class attendees, see how they look, what is working well, and what can be improved, all the while sharing best practices that align with what's trending in the ever changing landscape of social media.
The document provides 13 productivity tips for busy tech professionals. It discusses that each tip is presented as a myth that is then debunked by providing a better approach. Some key tips discussed include focusing on passion over money, building expertise in key areas rather than learning a little about everything, developing networks rather than working as a "lone genius", learning to say no and scope tasks to avoid overcommitting, and maintaining accessible to-do lists with clear prioritization. Real-world examples are provided for many of the tips. The document aims to help professionals work smarter and more effectively.
These slides provide hacks on how to increase Instagram followers. The slides will prove very productive for such an audience who want to start a business account on Instagram.
This document provides inspiration and encouragement for creative thinking and innovation. It discusses developing a "maker mindset" and refusing to wait for instructions. It encourages asking what problems need solutions and just starting projects without overthinking. The document advocates for initiating ideas and taking risks to make something different, innovative, or "awesomesauce" despite potential doubts or failures along the way. The overall message is to ignite creative confidence and refuse to wait to create or make something.
Jonathan has worked remotely from home since 2008, first as a freelancer, then as an entrepreneur and consultant running a distributed team and most recently as a contract developer. His story about going remote is rooted in a desire to work closer to his family. This talk will explore the benefits and challenges over the past eight years through stories, tips and a vision for what the purpose of remote work can be. Romanticism aside, let's look at the practical experience of one person's remote journey.
1) Death is the ultimate motivator to avoid living one's life in vain. Regularly remembering mortality fuels motivation.
2) Goals should be set for each role one plays, such as son or spouse, to start moving in a meaningful direction. Monthly, weekly and daily goals help achieve larger objectives.
3) Tasks are categorized into quadrants of urgency and importance using the Eisenhower matrix to prioritize workload and say no when necessary.
