The ancient Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, Greece and were held in honor of Zeus. Originally a one-day event, they were later extended to three and then five days. The games were part of a religious festival and included running, long jump, throwing, wrestling, boxing and pankration competitions. Only free Greek men could compete naked, as clothing was seen as a disadvantage. First place winners received laurel wreaths instead of medals, and gained fame and honor rather than monetary prizes. The modern Olympics, while retaining some traditions, now allow both men and women from all countries to compete every few years in various cities around the world.
