G. Do you think that the lifestyle of the inhabitants of your town or city reflects behavior that is in line with the concept of sustainable development? In your opinion, what should be improved?
Sustainable living in São Paulo: One citizen's efforts to promote change through community action

SÃO PAULO
MY CITY:
2. SÃO PAULO
It’s one of the biggest cities in
the world, with more than 11
million inhabitants. The trash
is one of the main concerns
of its citizens and its solution
is far from ideal:
the city produces
So far, the solutions found
involve the disposal of waste
in a landfill (burying the
waste and its remains) or its
incineration, which is highly
polluting.of solid waste.

3. Surely, the management of
São Paulo’s solid waste is far
from reaching efficient results
to build a sustainable future.
In an attempt to get to the right path, São
Paulo’s City Hall implemented a selected
collection of waste, but still had low
adherence of the population, capturing
only 1.6% of recycling waste.
Also, it was noticed that the
most relevant solid waste
came from households,
and not from factories or
companies.

5. In 2014 , São Paulo’s City Hall launched an ambitious plan
called Integrated Management Plan of Solid Waste, the main
goal of which was to encourage the citizens to compost their
own organic waste. In my opinion, this is a major step to
promote the sustainable development in my city.
Considering that São Paulo’s population had a low
compliance with the selection of recyclables, the City Hall
created an experimental and revolutionary project that gives
composters to a selected group of people, who will become
the broadcasters and communicators of this new
attitude through sustainability.
Some NGOs, public schools and education networks as well
as 2.000 people, myself included, were chosen among more
than 10,000 subscribers to get such composters. Through
this project, I have learned how to compost, plant my own
vegetable garden and collect and maintain rainwater. Most
importantly, I had the responsibility to become a true and
strong influence in my community.
I believe that the lifestyle of the inhabitants of my city is not
fully aligned with the concept of Sustainable Developement.
Nevertheless, actions to improve this situation have been
taken and people are starting to change.

7. There is a big public park next to my house, Parque Severo Gomes.
Its Facebook page* was abandoned by the older managers. I
realized it could be better taken care of, so I applied and took over
itsadministration.IredesigneditswholeFacebookpageandcreated
more postings with the goal of reaching more people. I also used it
as an important tool to pass my experience with sustainability on to
other people.
I understand that the preservation of green areas is an important
part of sustainable development as well. I would like to share
my experience of being part and leading actions in favor of my
community.
The result was formidable: not only the people involved in this
experience increased by 80%, but I was also able to create a
genuine communicative page aimed at the residents and the park
goers. People now take care of the whole neighborhood, are more
open minded to make new friends and more conscious about the
environment.
I also led and helped implement several projects together with
our City Chamber, requesting improvements in the administration,
security and infrastructure of the park. I was in constant contact
with one of our City Councilman who was very supportive. All those
actions have resulted in a great improvement of the park.
Through the park Facebook page and my contact in the City
Chamber, I could also help with another community movement,
which was the recovery and remodeling of an old public square that
was abandoned and full of garbage. Today, it is still taken care of by
the local community and it is a beautiful place for people to be!

8. THERE ARE MANY CITIZENS
IN SÃO PAULO WHO BELIEVE
IN A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE,
THE SAME WAY THAT THERE ARE
PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO DO IT.
FOR THOSE ACTIONS THAT
I MENTIONED BEFORE TO HAPPEN
IN A BIGGER SCALE,
WE SHOULD INVEST ON A BETTER
EDUCATION AND RELY MORE
ON THE COMMUNITIES.
TOGETHER, WE CAN ENCOURAGE
MORE AND MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN
THIS CAUSE.
