The Chickasaw people first settled along the Tennessee River near Huntsville, Alabama and took their name from the tradition of two brothers, Chisca and Chacta. They hunted with bows and arrows, knives, and blow guns, and grew their own food which was shared communally. By the early 20th century there were approximately 12,772 Chickasaw living in Oklahoma and 2,000 living in both Texas and California.
