- I’d like to tell you about some useful iventions of Anglo-Saxon countries. I decided to focus on the bulb and the bicycle.
- First device I’ll talk about is the light bulb. Many scientist contributed to the development of the bulb. One of them was an English inventor Sir Humphry Davy who first created incandescent light by passing an electrical current through a thin strip of platinum in 1802. The the first patent for the incandescent lamp was granted to Frederick de Moleyns of England in 1841. He used powdered charcoal heated between two platinum wires. His bulb hasn’’t gained recognition because a filament was melting. In 1854 German inventor - Heinrich Göbe succeeded in constructing the first electric light bulb by using a filament made out of carbonides bamboo. Then the English chemist and physicist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan improved the incadescent lamp. He invented the first synthetic fibre and received a patent for it. In 1878, he demonstrated his new electric lamps in Newcastle, England. In 1877, the American Charles Francis Brush manufactured some carbon arcs to light. These arcs were used on a few streets, in a few large office buildings, and even some stores.
- Although the story of the light bulb begins much earlier an American inventor Thomas Edison is usually credited with the invention of this device. In 1878 Edison began working on a system of electrical illumination, something he hoped could complete with gas and oil based lighting. He invented the first commercially viable electric light.
- On December 31st , 1879 after years of work and thousands of experiments, Edison gave the first public demonstration of the incandescent light bulb at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The inventor continued to improve this design and it became the first commercially practical incandescent light bulb that lasted for many hours.
- Thomas Edison was born in 1847, in Milan and died in 1931, in West Orange. He was a very successful inventor, scientist, and businessman whose inventions significantly impacted the world. Designs such as the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting everyday electric light bulb were all the result of Edison’s work.
- Nowadays, we can buy light bulbs, that look similar to the Edison’s, but sometimes they are strange or have different shapes. We can find many types including halogen, fluorescent, and LED.
- The second invention I’d like to tell you about is a pedal-driven bicycle. This bike was metal and included iron-rimmed wooden wheels, a steerable wheel in the front and a larger wheel in the rear which was connected to pedals via connecting rods. It was invented in 1836 by Kirkpatrick MacMillan.
- But the first bikes were wooden and had to be propelled along by pushing one’s feet on the ground. First inventor of this device was German Karl Drais who in 1816 built draisine, also nicknamed the dandy horse.This invention became successful in England. It was called hobby horse and it was made of metal.
- The constructor of pedal-driven bicycle was Scottish Kirkpatrick Macmillan. He was born in 1812 and he died in 1878 in Keir.He was a blacksmith. He has never thought of pattending his bike. A 1839 plaque on the family smithy in Courthill reads "He builded better than he knew." Yet MacMillan lived in Glasgow and worked at the Vulcan Foundry during the relevant period around 1840, not in Courthill.
- Now bikes are lighter and faster, and also we can ride them in different conditions (for example, in the forest or in the countryside). They’re colourful and children often have drawings or stickers on them.
- That’s all I wanted to tell you about the inventions I’ve chosen. The bulb and the bike are still very important for us and they make our life easier. Thanks for your attenion.
