Week 3 Lec
Physical changes happening in your brain  changing muscles, etc.
Late for work – 5 second films
     @jg_rat
John Grey – started journalism in 1976. “linotype and typewriter”
     Started couriermail.com.au in 1999
Newspapers since 1605  different now, but principle didn’t change.
User-friendly, easy to use, efficient, easily distributed
Survived the rise of the TV
     Rupert Murdoch, 2005
“Unless we awaken to these changes, and adapt quickly, we will, as an
industry, be relegated to the status quo of also-rans or ..?...
     News organisations trend of revenue.
Right model: free news, get revenue for ads? Need to charge properly for
     ads.
Registered, with demographically targeted ads? Didn’t happen.
“Freemium” model is being attempted now for eg. In the Herald Sun.
“Metered” model, what the NY Times does.
No such thing as an ‘exclusive’ anymore, because of the internet.
Google: never paid for news (Beatles take-off)
News firms are inevitably looking for ways to make it pay.
The website business model doesn’t add up on the scale needed to pay for
the journalism our society needs (or wants)
Will see some drastic changes in the digital media landscape over the next
     year or two.
News firms recognize future is digital  massive reorganization 
centralization to remove duplication  more job cuts.
News will start to look all the same.
Screens around courier news room – can see current top 10 stories being
read at that moment in time. Like the stock market.
Informed news judgments  would realize what people are interested,
and re-think placement. Dominant on the screens – local stories,
heartening. Anything to do with public servants, or more personality end
of politics, the hip=pocket, tunnel tolls, the cost of living, was important.
Wouldn’t you think improving the quality of your news would lead to
     greater sales? Someone screwed up.
Hard too get a job, journalism job cuts everywhere  Need to be the best.
While journalism is still a priority for these big businesses, it is still the
core reason for being and they will continue to send people out to get
‘exclusives’ even though they’re stolen in a few minutes.

Look at headlines
Which story would you tweet? A well-written tweet (NOT like Sky News) as a
teaser. It tells you the story in a way that is enough for you to want to go and
read it.
Always have organisation, job title, then name.
