Q9a/b. Thank you. This year’s ballot will also include a proposed amendment to the State
Constitution to change the way members of the state’s Board of Education are selected.
Currently, Board of Education members are elected by the public. If the amendment passes,
Board of Education members would be selected by the Governor and then confirmed by the State
Senate. People on both sides of this issue make arguments that they hope will sway public
opinion to their point of view.
Supporters of the amendment argue that Hawaii’s education system needs to be reformed
because currently, no one is directly accountable for education in Hawaii. By allowing the
Governor to appoint Board members, the Governor can be held directly accountable for
educational policy. On the other hand, opponents of the amendment argue that an elected board
better represents the opinions of the state’s residents, and that the board should remain directly
accountable to the people of the state.
After hearing these arguments, will you be voting for or against the amendment?

chosen by government leaders, press 4. If you plan on voting against the amendment, so that the
state’s Board of Education will remain an elected body, press 6. If you will be voting on

  • 4. Page 4 888-450-VOTE • www.merrimanriver.com Q9a/b. Thank you. This year’s ballot will also include a proposed amendment to the State Constitution to change the way members of the state’s Board of Education are selected. Currently, Board of Education members are elected by the public. If the amendment passes, Board of Education members would be selected by the Governor and then confirmed by the State Senate. People on both sides of this issue make arguments that they hope will sway public opinion to their point of view. Supporters of the amendment argue that Hawaii’s education system needs to be reformed because currently, no one is directly accountable for education in Hawaii. By allowing the Governor to appoint Board members, the Governor can be held directly accountable for educational policy. On the other hand, opponents of the amendment argue that an elected board better represents the opinions of the state’s residents, and that the board should remain directly accountable to the people of the state. After hearing these arguments, will you be voting for or against the amendment? If you plan on voting for the amendment so that the state’s Board of Education will now be chosen by government leaders, press 4. If you plan on voting against the amendment, so that the state’s Board of Education will remain an elected body, press 6.
