Personal learning outcomes
After attending this one day classroom course you
will:
 know what the OCP (Open Compute Project) and Open Hardware terms
mean with respect to micro, small, medium and large enterprise data
centres, and hyper-scale utility data centres
 know the background to OCP and why and how it started
 know why OCP and Open Hardware will be a disruptive
transformational force for conventional enterprise data centres both in
terms of capital and operational expenditure
 know the global market intelligence in terms of investment comparisons
between conventional and OCP data centres
© JRL 6
Personal learning outcomes …cont
 know why the world’s largest manufacturers of servers, storage and network
equipments are concerned about the impacts of OCP and how they are restructuring
their corporations to meet the disruptive challenge posed by OCP and Open hardware
data centres
 know the importance of holistic design and appreciate how data centre subsystems are
closely coupled and as such why a subsystem should not be treated in isolation
 know the fundamental hardware components that make up an OCP data centre and
the role of each of these components and how synergy is achieved between the ICT
subsystems and the data centre power, cooling and environmental facilities and other
subsystems including software
 know the key differences between a conventional Enterprise Data Centre and a vanity
free OCP data centre
 be able to describe some examples of OCP data centres
 know the pros and cons between conventional enterprise data centres and OCP data
centres
© JRL 7
Personal learning outcomes …cont
 know why the Open community develops hardware products significantly
faster than the conventional vendors
 know why OCP data centres can achieve energy efficiencies with PUE’s
better than 1.08 and why conventional enterprise data centres cannot
 know why network topologies are so fundamentally different between
conventional and OCP data centres
 know how to design and plan for future transformation from conventional
enterprise data centre to OCP data centre
 know why large USA Banks are rapidly adopting OCP
 know why homogeneous OCP data centres can achieve data centre
operational staffing levels that are one hundred times better than
conventional heterogeneous enterprise data centres
 know the principles of simplicity
 know all of the data centre subsystems and be able to mind map them
graphically in the pursuit of simplification
© JRL 8
Personal learning outcomes …cont
 know how hardware efficiencies can be achieved through the use
of software and lightweight virtual machines such as Linux
Containers
 know the fundamentals of SDN (Software Defined Networks) and
why this technology is reducing the cost of Ethernet switches by
50%
 know why the new OCP racks are so space efficient and do not
follow the legacy 19inch fixing practice developed in 1911 for
railway signalling systems
 know the fundamentals of the Value Management Method and be
able to execute a basic systematic Function Analysis
 know why OCP data centres use significantly less resources
compared to conventional enterprise data centres
 know how to plan enterprise data halls to ease migration towards
OCP
© JRL 9
Personal learning outcomes … cont
 know why OCP servers are so much more energy efficient and
lower cost than conventional servers
 know the differences in data hall ICT equipment power and
network interfacing and why OCP equipment cord interfaces are
all on the front
 know why modern OCP servers do not include conventional
AC/DC power supply units
 know why OCP data centres do not require generator backup for
100% capacity
 know why OCP data centres do not use centralised UPS
 know why OCP data centres do not require refrigeration cooling
systems and the benefits of this approach
 know why OCP data centres do not need to operate within the
constraints of the ASHRAE temperature envelopes

Does a $3,000 to $5,000 server need to look expensive ?
What function does the server’s looks contribute to its use ?

Editor's Notes

  1. Frankovsky joined Facebook from Dell in 2009 as the social network was thinking about how to rebuild servers for the webscale world. His work would later become the Open Compute Project, which was launched in 2011, and has since saved Facebook an estimated $1.2 billion in costs. Because the hardware developments it built and encouraged were open source and freely available, it’s also responsible for a lot of heartburn in the hardware business.
