 Dr. Brian Klagges is a respected Manchester, New
Hampshire-based physician who is certified by the
American Board of Anesthesiology and provides
interventional pain management. Additionally, Brian
Klagges, MD, was the first in his area to implant an
occipital nerve stimulator.
Employed in treating difficult-to-address conditions of
the neck and head, including chronic migraines, occipital
nerve stimulation was first developed in the late 1970s.
This procedure targets the occipital nerve, which has an
origination point at the neck’s base, and involves
implanting a device at the skull base, from which it
transmits electrical impulses to the occipital nerve via
wire.

3. OCCIPITAL NERVE STIMULATION
 Typically implanted beneath the collarbone, the pulse
generator is the power source through which small
electrical impulses are sent to the nerve. The electrical
current particularly helps mask the pain associated with
conditions such as nerve injuries and whiplash-related
headaches.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the technology is still in
development, with studies suggesting that
approximately 40 percent of those suffering from chronic
migraines achieve sustained benefit from occipital nerve
stimulator treatment lasting up to six years.
