XML technology makes things only worse. Nowadays we count 400 to 500 different incompatible XML vocabularies.
This problem is epidemic in the world today. Too many people implement a single data element in many different ways. We need to be able to break these down to realize what it is (semantics) and how best to represent it (structure). The ebXML Core Components methodology (CCTS v 2.0) constrains the way we look at data elements and contains a complete methodology for working with data dictionaries.
Main point: By breaking apart a set of documents into atomic “components” (also called Data Elements), and assigning properties and specific identifiers to each data element unit, you can start to compare multiple taxonomies at an atomic level. Patterns of compatibility start to emerge and a comprehensive mapping of data from one taxonomy to the other can be achieved. Adding in a universally unique identifier is a potentially giant leap forward to giving computers cognitive abilities. The process is more complex than it appears. There are factors that affect semantics such as “context”. Context needs to be explained.
