λακκούβα του. Ήταν ένα νερό σάπιο,
βρώμικο κι ολόμαυρο. Σαν τ' απονέρια που
κατασταλάζουν το χειμώνα στα παλιά
νεκροταφεία, σουρωμένα μέσα στα
βουλιαγμένα μνημούρια. Μύριζε μούχλα,
σβησμένη πίπα κι αποτσίγαρο...».

Ύστερα και γιατί, ολοένα πιο συχνά, τύχαινε τώρα ν'
απαντούμε απ' τ' άλλο μέρος να' ρχονται οι αργές οι
συνοδείες με τους λαβωμένους. Όπου απιθώνανε
χάμου τα φορεία οι νοσοκόμοι, με τον κόκκινο σταυρό
στο περιβραχιόνιο, φτύνοντας μέσα στις παλάμες, και
το μάτι τους άγριο για τσιγάρο. Κι οπού κατόπι, σαν
ακούγανε για που τραβούσαμε, κουνούσαν το κεφάλι,
αρχινώντας ιστορίες για σημεία και τέρατα.
Όμως εμείς το μόνο που προσέχαμε ήταν εκείνες οι
φωνές μέσα στα σκοτεινά, που ανέβαιναν, καυτές
ακόμη από την πίσσα του βυθού ή το θειάφι:
«Οϊ Οϊ, μάνα μου», «οϊ οϊ, μάνα μου», και κάποτε, πιο
σπάνια, ένα πνιχτό μουσούνισμα, ίδιο ροχαλητό, που
'λεγαν, όσοι ξέρανε, είναι αυτός ο ρόγχος του
θανάτου.
4. Σ’ όλο το μήκος της παραλίας η θάλασσα ξέβραζε
ψόφια άλογα του στρατού που τα είχαν ρίξει από
τα πλοία κατά τη φυγή. Κανείς δε βρισκόταν να τα
μαζέψει. Σάπιζαν στον ήλιο και τη βροχή. Κάπου
κάπου βγαίναν και ανθρώπινα πτώματα. Βρομούσε
η περιοχή. Και ήταν και η βρόμα από τον στρατό
και τους ανθρώπους.
5. Ο δεύτερος παγκόσμιος πόλεμος αναστάτωσε τις
φιλειρηνικές μας ιδέες και η ειρήνη που
επακολούθησε δεν μπόρεσε ακόμα να τις
αποκαταστήσει. Μισώ τον πόλεμο πάντα. Ο νικητής
εγκολπώνεται τις μέθοδες του νικημένου και τις
εφαρμόζει αδίσταχτα ,για να μην ξανάρθει τούτος
και χρησιμοποιήσει χειρότερες.
6. Μια ταπεινή γυρεύουμε γαλήνη
Το στοργικό μας άντρα να χαρούμε
Κι ως ήρεμη χαρά το σπίτι κλείνει.
Κι αν παίρνοντας ο πόλεμος αυτά
Ολάκερο τον κόσμο μας χαρίσει
Πως τάχα τα κενά του τα φρικτά
Μια ρημαγμένη ζήση θα γιομίσει.
Πολλά δεν είναι κείνα που ζητούμε
7. Τι πιο μισητό από τον πόλεμο! Αυτός που στερεί με
το πιο βίαιο τρόπο τη γαλήνη και τη σπιτική ηρεμία.
Αυτός που με τόση ευκολία αφαιρεί το δώρο της
ζωής. Αυτός που αποχωρίζει παιδιά απ΄ τους γονείς
και γονείς απ΄ τα παιδιά τους. Αυτός που ανατρέπει
τη φυσική ισορροπία του κόσμου και κάνει τους
γονείς να θάβουν τα παιδιά τους .
Ο πόνος των θυμάτων έχει τη μυρωδιά του σάπιου
νερού, παίρνει τη μορφή της καταστροφής , του
ολέθρου και της διάλυσης, έχει τον ήχο του
επιθανάτιου ρόγχου, έχει την αίσθηση του
παράλογου…
