Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin important for vision, growth, and tissue repair. It occurs as retinol in animal foods and beta-carotene in plant foods, with beta-carotene converted to retinol in the intestine. A national program was launched in India in 1970 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to address vitamin A deficiency and control blindness through measures like ensuring healthy food supply, nutrition standards, and nutrition labelling.
