- #3 Sutures are the combination of thread, needle and how they fit together. When it comes to thread, you must remember three elements, Material, thickness and filament. Material is of two types, natural and synthetic. Natural is made from the natural source. Example: a. Silk, b. Catgut sutures. Catgut sutures are made from the sub mucosa of sheep’s intestine and synthetic is from various synthetic sources. Threads are again of two types, Absorbable and non-absorbable. Absorbable sutures will be absorbed by the body in a fixed span of time and non-absorbable sutures will always remain in the body as wound support requires longer period. When you are talking about thickness, size of the thread denotes thickness. Look at this, zero number is one size and as you move from zero number to the left, it will be smaller and smaller. Ten zero size will be the smallest in size which can be view only by lenses. And as you move from zero to number 7, it will be thicker and thicker and size number seven will be the thickest. Filaments are of two types, Monofilament and multifilament. Monofilament is a single strand or thread. Examples are Nylon or Polyamide, Polypropylene, Polydiaxanone and Poliglecaperone25. Multifilament are several threads, twisted together, or braided together, or woven together. Examples are Polyglycolic Acid, Silk, Polyester ,Polyglactin910 Coming to needle, you must again remember three elements, shape, length and point geometry. Shape is of two types straight and curved needle. Length of the needle will be the length between two edges, the tip and the other end.
