Number of pages: 4 (1100 words)
Academic Level: Postgraduate
Deadline: 4 hours
Instructions: You are required to provide a thread to the main
forum. The thread must be 1,000–1,500 words, must include at
least 3 peer-reviewed references, and must demonstrate course-
related knowledge.
· Chapter 10: Do you think it is possible for an outsider to
accurately discern about the underlying cultural values of an
organization by analyzing symbols, ceremonies, dress, or other
observable aspects of culture in comparison to an insider with
several years of work experience? Select a percentage (e.g.,
10%, 70%, etc.) and explain your reasoning.
· Chapter 11: A noted organization theorist once said, "Pressure
for change originates in the environment. Pressure for stability
originates within the organization." Do you agree?
· Chapter 12: If managers frequently use experience and
intuition to make complex, non-programmed decisions, how do
they apply evidence-based management (which seems to suggest
that managers should rely on facts and data)?
· Chapter 13: In a rapidly changing organization, are decisions
more likely to be made using the rational or political model of
organization?
· What biblical implications should be included/addressed?
How can/should a biblical worldview be applied?

Course textbook: Richard L. Draft, Organization Theory &
Design, 12 Edition
Read and respond to the following post. Each respond has to be
more than 100 words with at least one reference.
Post 1: According to the text, the purpose of a mission, is to
“provide organizational members and constituents a clear
understanding of an agency’s purpose, goals and objectives.”
(Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D. B., & Klofas, J. 2015 pp.36) This
mission is a guideline to keep everything in place and to avoid
misdirection of what the values are. For example, the
department of Homeland Security initiated in a post-9/11 era, it
was formed to thwart terrorism, enforce immigration, disaster
resilience, secure cyberspace and manage our borders. (U.S.
Department of Homeland Security., 2016) Structurally
comprised of 22 agencies each with its own bureaucracy and
hierarchy. In such tumultuous times, the DHS has had to adjust
fire, restructuring on several instances to fulfill its mission.
Leadership in the text is defined as, the establishment of
"direction by developing a vision of the future, align people
through shared values and vision." (Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D.
B., & Klofas, J., 2015) With so many hands in the pot its
become harder to execute the core missions and direct the
employees on the target path. We saw this happen in 2005 with
Hurricane Katrina, the DHS had spent so much time and effort
preparing for another 9/11 scale attack, prioritizing one
competency over the other. In doing so, delaying the relief
efforts to the city of New Orleans. From a criminal justice
administration perspective, the internal constituency
compromising safety for security. The role of securing our
nation is not bound only by the DHS, its a role encompassing all
levels of criminal justice from municipal to federal. After 9/11,
we were expelled out of our comfort zone, exposing the cracks
in the system, forcing the entire organization to rethink the way
we conducted business.
Post 2:There have been many changes to criminal justice
organizations in the twenty-first century that have altered the
way administrators manage these organizations. Traditional
methods used are no longer sufficient or as effective in
managing these organizations like they once were.
Organizational structures, purpose and leadership is constantly
changing to suit the needs of their population. Organization
polices are changing due to the greater levels of discretion
police officers now use, as well as changes to internal structures
like unionizations. These new implementations change
management roles, influence job assignments, change hiring and
promotion potentials as well as safety and rights of police
officers (Stojkovic, 2015, p.16). With new forms of crime and
society changing, it is important to change management
strategies to better be able to provide for the population you
serve.
Post 3: When comparing the open system theory and the closed
system theory, it is important to truly understand the difference
between the two. A comparative example of sorts might be an
elderly gentleman set in his ways. He has his routine, that he
has done the same way, every day, for 30 years. While the
ability to differ is possible, he avoids it; as he knows his way is
the best way. This represents a closed-system. An open-system
would be best described as the elderly gentleman’s grandson
who likes to explore different ways of conducting business,
never in a set way, so long as the work gets done.
When looking at the police system, one can see that it is ever
evolving. Although yes, it does have a hierarchy, and there are
laws that govern how it conducts itself; it is an example of an
open-theory.
When focused on A single officer opposed to the department he
works for, his day is never the same. Sure, he dresses himself
the same. He eats breakfast all the same. He reports on time,
and patrols the same area – but the possibility for something to
occur is indefinite. The officer must be able to respond to any
given situation, at any given time. The officer is influenced by
his environment, and he influences the environment (Stojkovic,
S., Kalinich, D. B., & Klofas, J. 2015 p.13).
Post 4: There are two type of systems that are used when
identifying what type of framework is used for an organization.
That is open and closed system components. An open system
allows interaction between their internal elements and the
environment. An open system is defined as a “system in
exchange of matter with its environment, presenting import and
export, building-up and breaking-down of its material
components. Closed –systems pretty much close themselves off
from the outside environment. According to the text, “closed-
system criminal justice agencies become dysfunctional as a
result of their ability to keep external forces from effecting
change and innovation” (Dias and Vaughn, 2006). A component
that is an open component that plays a role in the Criminal
Justice system and the military, is the US Coast Guard. This
component has to be an open system due to their mission with
the military and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Ever since the 9/11 attacks, our society has had to change due to
the threat of terrorism that has increased over the last 17 years.
The Coast guard have to keep constant contact between a
variety of agencies depending on what type of issues that takes
place. Whether that be DHS, local law enforcement, or the
military, the Coast Guard have to be adaptable in order to
complete their mission effectively. For example, the Trump
administration has increased the amount of focus we are having
on immigration. In the mission of the Coast Guard law
enforcement program is states, “The Coast Guard is the lead
federal maritime law enforcement agency and the only agency
with both the authority and capability to enforce national and
international law on the high seas, outer continental shelf, and
inward from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to inland
waters.” This is a good example of how the open-system applies
to this organization. In our text it states, “Thinking about
organizations as open systems leads to understanding the
importance of the environmental demands and an agency’s
willingness and ability to be responsive to community needs (.”
(Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas 2015 p.29)

  • 2. Course textbook: Richard L. Draft, Organization Theory & Design, 12 Edition Read and respond to the following post. Each respond has to be more than 100 words with at least one reference. Post 1: According to the text, the purpose of a mission, is to “provide organizational members and constituents a clear understanding of an agency’s purpose, goals and objectives.” (Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D. B., & Klofas, J. 2015 pp.36) This mission is a guideline to keep everything in place and to avoid misdirection of what the values are. For example, the department of Homeland Security initiated in a post-9/11 era, it was formed to thwart terrorism, enforce immigration, disaster resilience, secure cyberspace and manage our borders. (U.S. Department of Homeland Security., 2016) Structurally comprised of 22 agencies each with its own bureaucracy and hierarchy. In such tumultuous times, the DHS has had to adjust fire, restructuring on several instances to fulfill its mission. Leadership in the text is defined as, the establishment of "direction by developing a vision of the future, align people through shared values and vision." (Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D. B., & Klofas, J., 2015) With so many hands in the pot its become harder to execute the core missions and direct the employees on the target path. We saw this happen in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina, the DHS had spent so much time and effort preparing for another 9/11 scale attack, prioritizing one competency over the other. In doing so, delaying the relief efforts to the city of New Orleans. From a criminal justice administration perspective, the internal constituency compromising safety for security. The role of securing our nation is not bound only by the DHS, its a role encompassing all levels of criminal justice from municipal to federal. After 9/11, we were expelled out of our comfort zone, exposing the cracks in the system, forcing the entire organization to rethink the way we conducted business.
  • 3. Post 2:There have been many changes to criminal justice organizations in the twenty-first century that have altered the way administrators manage these organizations. Traditional methods used are no longer sufficient or as effective in managing these organizations like they once were. Organizational structures, purpose and leadership is constantly changing to suit the needs of their population. Organization polices are changing due to the greater levels of discretion police officers now use, as well as changes to internal structures like unionizations. These new implementations change management roles, influence job assignments, change hiring and promotion potentials as well as safety and rights of police officers (Stojkovic, 2015, p.16). With new forms of crime and society changing, it is important to change management strategies to better be able to provide for the population you serve. Post 3: When comparing the open system theory and the closed system theory, it is important to truly understand the difference between the two. A comparative example of sorts might be an elderly gentleman set in his ways. He has his routine, that he has done the same way, every day, for 30 years. While the ability to differ is possible, he avoids it; as he knows his way is the best way. This represents a closed-system. An open-system would be best described as the elderly gentleman’s grandson who likes to explore different ways of conducting business, never in a set way, so long as the work gets done.
  • 4. When looking at the police system, one can see that it is ever evolving. Although yes, it does have a hierarchy, and there are laws that govern how it conducts itself; it is an example of an open-theory. When focused on A single officer opposed to the department he works for, his day is never the same. Sure, he dresses himself the same. He eats breakfast all the same. He reports on time, and patrols the same area – but the possibility for something to occur is indefinite. The officer must be able to respond to any given situation, at any given time. The officer is influenced by his environment, and he influences the environment (Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D. B., & Klofas, J. 2015 p.13). Post 4: There are two type of systems that are used when identifying what type of framework is used for an organization. That is open and closed system components. An open system allows interaction between their internal elements and the environment. An open system is defined as a “system in exchange of matter with its environment, presenting import and export, building-up and breaking-down of its material components. Closed –systems pretty much close themselves off from the outside environment. According to the text, “closed- system criminal justice agencies become dysfunctional as a result of their ability to keep external forces from effecting change and innovation” (Dias and Vaughn, 2006). A component that is an open component that plays a role in the Criminal Justice system and the military, is the US Coast Guard. This component has to be an open system due to their mission with the military and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Ever since the 9/11 attacks, our society has had to change due to the threat of terrorism that has increased over the last 17 years. The Coast guard have to keep constant contact between a variety of agencies depending on what type of issues that takes place. Whether that be DHS, local law enforcement, or the military, the Coast Guard have to be adaptable in order to complete their mission effectively. For example, the Trump
  • 5. administration has increased the amount of focus we are having on immigration. In the mission of the Coast Guard law enforcement program is states, “The Coast Guard is the lead federal maritime law enforcement agency and the only agency with both the authority and capability to enforce national and international law on the high seas, outer continental shelf, and inward from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to inland waters.” This is a good example of how the open-system applies to this organization. In our text it states, “Thinking about organizations as open systems leads to understanding the importance of the environmental demands and an agency’s willingness and ability to be responsive to community needs (.” (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas 2015 p.29)
