222--THE CONCEPT OF INDEPENDENT NUCLEAR REGULATORY AUTHORITY 2
Nuclear Safety & Security Summit 2011
1. PRESS RELEASE London, June 2011
NUCLEAR SAFETY & SECURITY SUMMIT 2011:
Safeguarding your nuclear assets and operations in a post-Fukushima era
11st March 2011. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear accident shook Japan, due to a combination of techni-
cal failures brought on by an earthquake followed by a tsunami. 25 years after Chernobyl, this latest nuclear
disaster urgently requires nuclear safety and security systems and practices to be reviewed at an international
level. The key players in the nuclear industry must now be certain that they are doing as much as they can to
protect their company, their sta and the environment, as pressure to tighten and standardise regulations
increases around the world, and new risks such as ‘nuclear terrorism’ emerge.
In this context, IRN hosts the Nuclear Safety & Security Summit 2011 in Vienna on 27th and 28th of
September. To prevent further nuclear catastrophes, this summit brings together the most senior representa-
tives in Nuclear Safety, Security and Operations from the world’s leading Energy companies like EDF, EON, Enel,
TVO with regulators from the European Commission, ASN, JNES, WANO and many others to nd practical, feasi-
ble and e ective ways to enhance nuclear safety and security.
During the two day summit, nuclear specialists will examine the changing regulatory landscape whilst
sharing e ective workable solutions to the most pressing safety and security questions currently facing the
nuclear industry.
The event will be split into three parts:
• Market overview and regulatory landscape, aimed at getting to grips with new regulations including a
focus on the European Commission’s stress test.
• Systems management, involving disaster proofing operations against human and natural disaster,
enhancing power supply, ventilation and fuel storage systems.
• Improving operational efficiency, looking at improving HR management, comparing risk assessment
techniques and examing the future of nuclear operational efficiency.
At a time of uncertainty and rapid change, safety and security are at the top of the nuclear agenda. The
Nuclear Safety & Security Summit 2011 delivers realistic, e ective solutions to enhance nuclear systems man-
agement and drive operational efficiency.
