Solving the System-Level Design Riddle
In the last half of the 1990s EDA industry analysts began talking about the growing market for tools above the RTL handoff level. This new electronic systems level (ESL) tools market was supposedly going to explode and dramatically change the design landscape. Many companies were funded, but the market never really took off as forecasted. What happened?
The principle driving force for higher level tools, that is tools at a higher level of abstraction than gate-level RTL, was simply Moore's Law. Every two years we were growing the transistor count of most devices by 1.5x to 2x. We would need to work more productively at a higher level of abstraction to get our designs completed on time with a reasonable number of engineers. What happened instead was the rapid development of the semiconductor intellectual property market (called SIP, or just IP).
Today, nearly all semiconductor design approaches use the Waterfall model. A Waterfall model is where one stage of design, like specification, is fully completed before the next stage of design begins. Parallel or concurrent engineering is barely used if at all. In an era where specifications change often and design cycles need to shrink far more, the Waterfall model is no longer of use to us.
On October 1, Sonics started an effort to organize like-minded engineers into a LinkedIn group aimed at getting a new methodology adopted. Modeled somewhat after the Agile Software revolution that started to effect the software industry in 2002, anyone can now join the LinkedIn group, "Agile IC Methodology." Only three weeks after its launch, the group already had more than 200 members. Agile software techniques will not be able to completely map to a IC design methodology. Please join this group now and help us develop the next methodology for IC design.

This presentation was presented at the Renesas DevCon 2010. It shows how with the right approach you can reduce the boot time of a cold Linux boot. In this case - the MS7724 was used as a case study to achieve a one second boot time with a QT UI application.

In einer Gesellschaft, in der das Sammeln von personenbezogenen Daten mittlerweile alltäglich geworden ist, ist es nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass auch der innovative Maschinenbauer Daten sammelt, wo er nur kann. Produktdaten, Maschinendaten, Statistikdaten – in einer durchschnittlichen Produktionsanlage fallen bereits heute jeden Tag Gigabytes an Daten an. „Big Data“ wurde eines der Schlagworte der Industrie 4.0.
Doch was verspricht man sich davon? Welche Information steckt in den aufgezeichneten Maschinen- und Produktdaten? Und wie erfolgt die Auswertung?
Im Rahmen des Vortrags wird aufgezeigt, wie Unternehmen auf Basis einer etablierten Plattform wie MATLAB® ihre Auswertealgorithmen entwickeln, testen und ausrollen können. Die kontinuierliche Auswertung selbst erfolgt dann wahlweise auf einem Anlagenserver oder aber auch in Echtzeit direkt an der Maschine. Veranschaulicht wird dies anhand von Beispielen aus der Praxis.
Doch neben der gesammelten Daten kommt auch den Steuerungseinheiten in der Produktion in der Industrie 4.0 eine größere Bedeutung zu.
Wenn Werkstücke demnächst selbst wissen, wo sie im Produktionsablauf hin möchten und welcher Verarbeitungsschritt ihnen angedeihen soll, dann bedeutet das auch für die einzelnen Komponenten und Module in Produktion und Logistik ein mehr an Funktionalität, da sie auf diese Eingaben ebenfalls reagieren sollen.
Wie stellen Sie sicher, dass diese zusätzliche Funktionalität nicht zu Lasten der Energiebilanz gehen? Wie fahren Sie die Motoren und anderen aktiven Komponenten Ihrer Fertigung so, dass sie flexibel auf veränderte Routen der Werkstücke reagieren und dennoch im optimalen Bereich fahren?
Mehr denn je brauchen Sie gesteuerte und geregelte Komponenten und Module. Das sollte schon seit Industrie 3.0 vorhanden sein, jedoch ist auch hier noch viel ganz konkretes Potential zur Steigerung von Produktivität und Einsparung von Energie und Produktionszeit vorhanden.

Agile software development has gained great success in the past years, and is proven to be an efficient way to deliver working software. However, Agile development benefits are difficult to materialize in outsourced software projects. Many outsourced Agile projects had failed due to customers’ misunderstanding of Agile and misalignment of expectation, while the software vendors faced difficulty guiding the customers to co-create the software together. The mismatch in the working culture, rigid project governance, and lack of customer involvement were the common pitfalls in outsourced Agile projects.
Good agile contracts set the right foundation and conditions for working software. It guides the customers and software vendors to create successful working software together. Joshua will share how good agile contracts support the agile processes and practices that lead to quality software with great business value needed for success, while create long lasting customer-vendor relationships.

Android for the Enterprise and OEMs
While Android and open source software not-so-quietly revolutionized the mobile industry, Enterprise IT organizations have taken notice. “The consumerization of IT” and ubiquity of mobile devices are forcing a transformation of Enterprise IT infrastructures, something that Geoffrey Moore refers to as “Systems of Record” and “Systems of Engagement.” These new infrastructures will be built largely with open source components. But whether developing a new device or new IT infrastructure, development with open source software is not business as usual. Choosing and modifying components from external sources, integrating with proprietary code, evaluating licenses and community viability, etc., require new processes for choosing components and new ways of providing control and visibility.
In this presentation Peter Vescuso will discuss the issues of OEM development with Android and open source, where and how it impacts Enterprise IT, and for both how to provide the control and visibility required by management while giving developers the freedom they need to create and innovate.

- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
