Neonatal resuscitation is a set of interventions to assist newborns following birth, as 10% of babies need some assistance transitioning after delivery and 3% require positive pressure ventilation. Birth asphyxia, defined as failure to breathe at birth, is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in India, contributing to 1/5 of all neonatal deaths. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program was established in 1987 as the most effective tool to reduce perinatal asphyxia, and the goal of programs like IAP-NNF-NRP-FGM is to reduce the neonatal mortality rate to 9 per 1000 live births worldwide by providing NRP training to all delivery personnel.
