2-ETHYL HEXANOL (OCTANOL)
 2-Ethylhexanol is produced industrially by the aldol
condensation of n-butyraldehyde, followed by
hydrogenation of the resulting hydroxyaldehyde. About
2,500,000 tons are prepared in this way annually. The n-
butyraldehyde is made by hydroformylation of propylene,
either in a self-contained plant or as the first step in a fully
integrated facility. Most facilities make n-butanol and
isobutanol in addition to 2-ethylhexanol.The demand for oxo
alcohols would go up steadily in India in the coming years.
Considering the growth in demand for oxo alcohols, strong
case exists for capacity creation. Firm supply source for
propylene for the project is important. PVC is the important
user industry for phthalate plasticizers. The demand for
phthalate plasticizers would largely move in tune with the
performance and growth of the PVC industry. Indian
demand for octanol is estimated around 60,000 tonnes per
annum and estimated growth ratio of octanol is 7%.
www.niir.org
