The document discusses several challenges and realities of preserving digital cultural materials long-term, including:
1. Practical challenges like developing preservation policies, metadata for retrieval and identification, addressing technical obsolescence and physical deterioration, and ensuring authenticity over time.
2. Long-term realities like the lack of intrinsic value and durability of digital materials, as well as the need for powerful permanent institutions to own and maintain them through organizational continuity and resources.
3. Additional factors that can influence long-term preservation like social and political stability, and creating stable environmental conditions for storage media, similar to the stable conditions in Egyptian tombs that allowed preservation of papyrus documents.

Slides and notes from a presentation that I gave as part of a masterclass for library managers in April 2008. Some slides contain links and the slides are best read in conjunction with the notes that appear at the bottom of the slideshare screen.
The presentation looks at some of the key capabilities that are required, whether at a campus-wide, regional or national level to make sure that digitisation happens effectively, as rapidly as possible and offers value for money in the medium and long term.
