A common noun is a general name for a person,
place, thing, or idea and is not capitalized.
A proper noun is the specific name of a particular
person, place, thing, or idea and is always
capitalized.

4. Concrete vs. Abstract
A concrete noun names an object that can be
seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted (These are
nouns that can be touched).
• Examples: chair, desk, hair, car
An abstract noun names an idea, quality, or state.
(These are nouns that can not be touched).
• Beauty, wealth, liberty, peace, love.

5. Singular vs. Plural
Singular nouns refer to one person, place, thing, or
idea.
Plural nouns refer to more than one person, place,
thing, or idea (These usually end in -s or -es).

A collective noun is a singular noun that refers to a
group of people or things.

7. Compound Noun
A compound noun is made up of two or more
words and it may be written as one word, separate
