2. Two years ago, we went to Notting Hill
carnival, but we have a problem…we only
remeber some information about its origin…
Do you help us to put this information in
order?
3. Carrie remembers…
The carnival is organised by Caribbean
immigrants who settled in the area in the
1950s, which were celebrating the elimination of
slavery and the slave trade. Trinidadinans
couldn´t celebrate their festivals during the
period of slavery, and then they decided to
enjoy their new freedom that the ending of
slavery brought them.
4. Luke remembers…
At the beginning of this tradition, there was
a strong element of parody in the songs and
dances Trinidadians performed. Trinidadians
dressed up in costumes that mimicked the
European fashions of their old white
masters. They also painted their faces white
with flour or wore white masks. They
established a tradition that continues in the
costume-making of today's Notting Hill
Carnival.
5. Keira remembers…
The proper name for this aspect of the
Carnival is “Mas” (from Masquerade). Taking
place every August Bank Holiday weekend in
the streets of London, the Notting Hill Carnival
is full of sounds, colourful sights and social
solidarity.
6. Mum and dad remember…
In the first carnival steel bands
of musicians paraded through
the streets of Notting Hill,
making the residents of the
neighbourhood dance, reminding
them of the Caribbean homes
they had left behind.
7. And finally…
fortgetful Batty!
The Notting Hill Carnival is
the largest street festival in Europe.
It started in 1964 by Afro-Caribbean
communities that wanted to celebrate
their cultures and traditions.
8. If you help the Fangs putting in order
the story of Notting Hill carnival,
they will get the next key they need
to open the cage of the Big Book of
Vampire History!!
