School Magazine
Article Writing
Report
NOTES (1): What is a school magazine?
● Produced once a year (maybe)
● Printed on quality paper with color photographs
● Has information about staff, school clubs,
extracurricular activities, sport, school trips, exam
results and original contributions written by students
● Articles written BY STUDENTS FOR STUDENTS –
people of the same age, background, education,
culture, and having similar ideas and outlook
NOTES (2): How to write an article:
●Don’t pretend to be an expert (don’t just “inform” your
readers, but engage and entertain them!)
●Be enthusiastic
●Be convincing
●Be interesting
●PERSONALIZE – emphasize points you have in
common with your readers (attitude to parents,
toward school work, friends, etc.). Try to replace I with
we → This makes the reader feel more involved
NOTES (3): Choose an interesting title
➢Summer Holidays Loom is interesting because:
○ “holidays” = usually something people look forward to
○ “Loom” = usually something unpleasant that you can’t escape
(Clouds loom in the sky; exams loom…) How can a holiday
loom? This title doesn’t explain – it makes people want to read
more – it creates interest
➢Which is more interesting? Why?
a.) How to Prepare for Exams
vs.
b.) Exam Nerves Cure
NOTES (4): Start with a question!
This makes readers feel some interaction
Example:
Are you one of the many students with exam nerves?
○you makes it personal, and the reader feels connected
○One of many gives a feeling of belonging and familiarity
NOTES (5): Transition from question to body
Example:
➢ Look, no stress!! Don’t we all wish we could say
this every day of our lives – and mean it?
Nowadays stress seems to be the one word that’s on
everybody’s mind.
Making a plan / outline
1. “Click-bait”
style title
2. Introduction:
