While the announced transactions so far in 2017 total £1 billion, smaller to mid-sized deals are more common as insurers prefer not to allocate large amounts of capital to one sizable transaction. The director of a buyout provider noted the focus will be on mid-market pensions this year. Even with smaller average deal sizes, 2017 is still expected to be a significant year for the volume of pension buyout transactions as schemes optimized in 2016 come to market.
U.k. firms are looking for new talent pensions and investments_PlenumPlenumGroupResearch
Global money managers are seeking to hire talent with experience in defined contribution plans as DC assets grow substantially. Recent changes in the UK retirement market have increased the focus on DC plans and highlighted the need for strategies tailored to DC "lifers". Firms are hiring people from insurance companies and those with expertise in DC from other countries to help distribute products and develop solutions for DC plan participants and advisers in this increasingly important market.
Several UK investment consultants are directing pension fund clients to their own lucrative fiduciary management services without putting contracts out to tender, which could lead to conflicts of interest. While some consultants defend their practices, others in the industry argue that fiduciary mandates should be awarded through an independent and competitive selection process to avoid potential conflicts of interest between advisory and fiduciary services. UK consultants currently manage 80% of fully delegated fiduciary mandates.
Aviva investors loses ceo to 'constant reviews' investment - pensions expertPlenumGroupResearch
Aviva Investors' CEO Alain Dromer is departing, which analysts see as symptomatic of the constant state of strategic review at the company. Aviva has announced streamlining measures including job cuts and office closures. Industry analysts say the constant changes have made it difficult for Aviva Investors to win new third-party clients and realize its potential, as there is a reported sense of inertia. Dromer had already led one strategic review that closed some business units.
The document discusses the state of the liability-driven investment (LDI) landscape in the UK and US markets. In the UK, there are currently 14 providers but the market may be oversaturated, while in the US the demand for LDI strategies still outstrips the supply. Some feel there needs to be more customized solutions available in the US rather than just extending duration. Established UK providers believe the market has enough capacity already and that new entrants could be detrimental, but others see benefits to increased competition.
Too many firms have experienced a search firm that charged extortionate retained fees and delivered nothing in return.
So is there a better way to approach this?
Analytics platforms that provide real-time information on pension assets and liabilities are being heavily invested in as traditional DB consulting revenues decline and de-risking strategies rise in popularity. These sophisticated tools blur boundaries between consultants, asset managers, and bankers by demystifying pensions. As most large consultants invest in such analytics platforms, the pace of change in the pension market is accelerating. There is growing demand for new professionals like holistic pension investment specialists who can utilize these dynamic tools to help navigate schemes through capital markets de-risking solutions.
The document discusses how the financial industry is adapting to new segregation requirements under EMIR by offering clients individual segregated accounts for their assets. It notes that buy-side institutions need to understand the options available to them, while clearing brokers need to disclose pricing and risk protection levels. It questions whether the industry can support thousands of individual accounts and if clients can afford the protection. It invites contact to discuss how their executive search network could help in this evolving market.
Track record, ability to draw from diverse experiences both in and outside of work, and illogical-seeming career paths are more important factors for critical hires than a first class degree according to leaders of companies. While degrees help recruiters with initial screening, ultimately it takes a well-rounded recruiter to identify the well-rounded candidate as the qualities sought often evade automated screening processes, which is why face to face discussions are still most effective.
Asset managers face challenges in complying with new regulations that require many over-the-counter derivatives to be centrally cleared, including requirements to post cash-based variation margin rather than bonds. This leaves asset managers needing to hold pools of cash in multiple currencies to meet daily margin calls, negatively impacting fund performance, or relying on asset transformation through repurchase markets to generate the necessary cash. However, there is a question around whether repurchase financing lines will remain available in stressed market conditions, and what funds can do if they cannot pay legally required variation margin calls due to lack of available cash or financing.
Actuaries focus on precision over accuracy in their work, which can cause tension with other financial professionals who prioritize accuracy. For example, when asked about bus arrival time, an actuary would provide an extremely precise estimate of 7 minutes and 32 seconds based on assumptions and data, while an investment manager would simply say within 20 minutes based on experience. While actuaries provide precision, their estimates may not always be accurate if conditions vary from their assumptions. Overall, actuaries play an important role but their methods could benefit from also considering accuracy rather than just precision.
