governments

agencies
● Align the larger NCD community around engagement with the 2025 HLM on
NCDs
*The GHC NCD Working Group is only open to GHC members in good standing
7. What are NCDs?
● Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, have
common features that relate to health status and health-related treatment:
○ Not transmitted person to person
○ Shared risk factors
○ Co-exist
○ Long latency
○ Long lasting
○ Mortality and Morbidity
○ Non-health consequences
● Some types of NCDs include cardiovascular diseases (such as heart attacks and
stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.
10. Why Focus on NCDs: The Global Burden Cont’
● Each year NCDs take 41 million lives
● 86% of those deaths occur in low and
middle-income countries
● Dual burden of infectious diseases and
NCDs
● 40% of those deaths could have be
prevented
● Poor, vulnerable, and marginalized
populations are most affected by these
conditions
