The Commonwealth Games held in Delhi in 2010 were plagued by massive cost overruns, unfinished projects, and allegations of corruption. The original budget of $361 million ballooned to an estimated $70 billion due to inflated contracts and kickbacks. An investigation found collusion between politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, and contractors to embezzle funds through fake invoices and shoddy construction work. The scam uncovered by the CAG and subsequent CBI probe was one of the biggest in India and caused huge losses to taxpayers. It tarnished the country's reputation and left many questioning India's ability to host large international events in the future.
