A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Words are not the only way we communicate,
we also use gestures, postures, facial
expressions, pauses etc., to convey our
feelings and behaviour.
We can refuse to speak or write but it is
impossible to avoid non-verbal
communication.
Charles Darwin started to study NVC.
3. NVC is the :
Communication without the use of
words or spoken language.
Transmission of messages or signals
through an eye contact, facial
expressions, gestures, postures, etc.
between two individuals.
4. Areas of communication
Body language
Eye Contact
Facial
Expression
Gestures
Postures
Chronemics
Oculesics
Appearance
Paralanguage
Voice
Word stress
Pitch
Pause
Rate
Volume
Articulation
5. All of our bodily movements like the nodding of
our head, blinking of our eyes, waving of our
hands, clapping etc., are guided by our feelings
and thoughts.
These gestures, postures, expressions etc., are the
signals that our body sends out to communicate.
That is why it is called ‘body language’.
6. It comes from the word “KINESIS” which
means movement.
We can say “the study of body
language or all the movements of our
body is kinesics”
7. Interpersonal communication
Expression of feelings
Interpreting the other’s behavior
Expressing ourselves without a
word.
8. Eyes have such a huge importance in any
kind of interaction.
Builds connection
More likely to be respect and listen
Feeling of being important
Audience trust
Easy to receive feedback.
Eyes are hence, the medium of
conveying information about other
people’s attitudes and thoughts.
9. 6 facial expressions: disgust, sadness,
happiness, fear, anger, surprise.
Signals in the communication process.
Understanding them is more important.
include smiling, frowning, eye rolling,
appearing bored or interested.
Other facial expressions are :
Excitement or even shock:
Winking: signal that we're joking
about a remark we made
Raising our eyebrows: surprised or
we don't believe what we're hearing.
10. A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication in which visible
bodily actions communicate particular messages.
Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of
the body like:
Shoulder shrug
Fingers crossed: hoping good luck
Thumbs up: Rubbing of palm: expecting or feeling cold
Okay sign
V-sign
Praying hands
Eyes rolling: bored
11. Posture is how we carry ourselves. It tells a lot about us like
how we stand, sit, walk, etc.
It can signal the characteristics and the current emotions and
attitudes of a person.
Posture conveys information about:
Interpersonal relations
Personality traits
(such as confidence,
openness.)
Social standing
Current emotional states
12. Study of how we use time to communicate.
The meaning of time differs around the world:
preoccupied
waste it regularly,
function better in the morning (early birds),
perform best at night.
E.g.: going for meetings and job interviews shows
punctuality, keeping schedules.
If we won’t communicate in proper time then misunderstandings or
disagreements will create problems.
13. The word OCU is often used interchangeably with eye
contact.
Oculesics is a subcategory of kinesics which means it is
the study of eye movement and eye behavior.
There are four aspects involved with oculesics:
I. Dimension 1: Eye Contact
II. Dimension 2: Eye Movement
III.Dimension 3: Pupil Dilation
IV.Dimension 4: Gaze Direction
14. It is also called Artificial communication.
It is well known that we react to people on the basis of
their appearance.
The use of personal adornment like clothing,
accessories, makeup, hairstyle, etc. provides important
non-verbal signals about one’s age, social and economic
status, educational level, personality, etc.
15. Manage your stress level

body language can make or break our business.
Prevents Conflict
Improve Your Presence
Open Up Your World: “Once you start studying body language
it’s like seeing the world in high definition.”
17. Giving possible wrong signals
Not having an organized language
Difficult to understand
Long Conversations not possible
18. “Not only what we say but how we
say matters the most.”
Study of voice communication outside of
language.
• Used to describe a wide range of vocal
characteristics like tone, pitch, and speed etc.
• It helps to express and reflect the speaker’s
attitude.
20. a) Voice: It is the context in which the speaker
is speaking. This can include the situation,
gender, mood, age and a person's culture.
Voice qualities like volume, pitch, accent
give each individual a unique 'voice print'.
b) Word Stress: Proper word stress is of
crucial importance in communication. By
putting stress or emphasis on a word here or
a word there in the same sentence we can
change the meaning.
21. c) Pitch Variation: Most of us introduce
wide variations in pitch while speaking.
These variations are necessary to catch the
listener’s attention and to keep him
interested in us.
d) Pause: The speaking speed is also
accompanied by pauses, at the right
moments. Incorrect use of pauses can
create problems. Too frequent pauses will,
however, spoil the speech.
22. e) Rate: is Speed of Speaking Measured in
Words Per Minute. Speaking fast or at a high
speed is not fluency. We speak at different
speeds on different occasions and while
conveying different parts of a message.
f) Volume variation: Our speech should be
loud enough to be audible to the audience.
But depending upon the situation, we should
monitor the volume of our speech so as to
generate interest of the audience.
23. g) Articulation:
It is the clarity in your voice
Manner of articulation describes how the tongue, lips,
jaw, and other speech organs are involved in making a
sound.
E.g. “ P ” – pneumonia or psychology
Clearly articulated message indicates competence and
confidence.
We should speak in such a way that all the word are
understood by the listener.
24. It was a wonderful and learning experience for me while
working on this project. This project took me through the
various phases and enabled me to know about “Non-
Verbal Communication”.
It was due to this project I came to know much about
different Types of Non- verbal communication and all other
things which are meaningful, useful.
I enjoyed each and every bit of work I had put into this
project.
