NTAC 2016 Electives Principles and Practices Day 1 Slide DeckRhitt Growl
This slide deck was used during day one of the Electives Principles and Practices workshop at NTAC 2016. The three day workshop was lead by New Tech Network Coach, Matt Thompson, and Satellite Center Digital Media Facilitator, Rhitt Growl. The purpose of the workshop was to familiarize participants with the key components of project based learning and for them to begin developing a project idea that they can implement in their classrooms.
Using Disruption to Stay on Course (for Liberal Education)Rebecca Davis
Today’s news headlines are filled with startling reports about U. S. higher education. Calls for dramatically reduced cost are paired with critiques of higher education outcomes, demands for jobs for graduates, and images of online learning (especially the massive open online course or MOOC) as the new magic bullet that will remake our system of higher education by bringing learning to the masses for free. But what do these developments have to do with institutions that focus on liberal education? How are liberal arts colleges and universities preserving a focus on their key missions and goals during a time of dramatic change in higher education?
This workshop will focus on technology-enabled disruptions challenging the traditional high touch liberal arts model—e.g., the massive open online course or MOOC, blended learning, big data, the globally networked world, etc.—and investigate creative responses that adapt these disruptions in service to the essential learning outcomes and high impact practices of liberal education. Participants will discuss disruptive innovations, examine cases of adaption to the liberal education context, and consider how they might implement such adaptions at their own institutions.

Brief abstract: Often, one-on-one instruction is not the most efficient nor enjoyable
method of helping your staff or community learn more about technology. And as Ereaders, tablet computers, smartphones and other gadgets grow in number and type
library staff need to have ways of addressing questions about these devices.
Whether you are a highly tech-skilled library or feel a bit behind the times, this
hands-on workshop is designed to help you best serve your community’s needs.
This session will:
• Help you assess your staff or community’s needs
• Help you decide the best teaching option for each kind of audience or device
• Give you a working knowledge of a number of popular devices
• Suggest ways to evaluate your programs
• Give you an opportunity to discuss ideas and opportunities with other attendees

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

Mentors are an important part of the Startup Weekend model!

32. Startup Weekend
Learnings!
Academic Libraries!
Embrace project
management!
• Planning by committee can b cumbersome!
• Select a ‘project manager’ that balances results and
consensus building!
Customer validation
is king!
• Library services and products need to get feedback at all
stages of development!
Iterative design
process!
• The first iteration of a service shouldn’t be its last!
• Learn to be nimble and change elements of your projects !
‘Getting things done’! • Being perfect rarely occurs; it’s better to work quickly and
make prototypes to generate as much feedback as
possible!
Outsider perspective! • Embrace and seek out feedback from outsiders!
• Use different language when discussing your solutions to
library problems!
