Why goals are so important
Do you remember the conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat?

   Alice                 I just wanted to ask you which way I ought to go.

   Cheshire Cat:      Well, that depends on where you want to get to.

   Alice:             Oh, it really doesn t matter ...

   Cheshire Cat:      Then it really doesn t matter which way you go!

We all remember Lewis Carroll s great book, and the movie Disney made. And how clearly we
get the point from Alice. Goals set our direction. They make our decisions easier because we
know where we re trying to go.

People without goals tend to drift. They may work hard, but they re usually disappointed with the
result. They don t feel fulfilled. Goals help guide you and keep you focused on what you NEED
to do, which may differ from what you want to do at that moment.

The only way to measure your progress is to have something to measure! Without goals, you
won t hold yourself accountable. You will live your life based on your feelings, rather than your
purpose.

Well-written goals turn intangible fantasies into tangible benchmarks. You know what you re
trying to accomplish every day. More importantly, you know why it s so important for you to do it.
You see your future and it depends on you today!

Along those lines, goals provide comfort when things get tough. When you know your goals, you
can withstand all the negative forces that exist inside and outside of you.

Step 1: State your goals
Think SMART when it comes to your goals. SMART is an acronym for:

Specific Exactly what are you striving for?
Measurable How will you know when you have reached your goal?
Action-oriented Do you have the authority and influence to achieve your goal?
Realistic Is your goal achievable?
Time & resource constrained When will your reach your goal? Are the needed resources
available to you?

With Step 1, we re focusing on the result. It s important to start with the desired outcome. At this point,
don t worry about how you ll accomplish it. You re focused on what you want to do.

Let s look at two examples of how to state your goals. The first column isn t really a goal at all. The
second column shows two examples of the same idea written SMART.

 NOT SMART                    SMART Goal
 Increase sales this year     Increase sales 25% this year without spending more on advertising
 Buy a car                    Buy a car without increasing my monthly payments by April 30

Toward the end of this workbook, you ll find a complete form that you can use to write down
your goals. It looks like this:

Step 2: Classify your goals.
First, prioritize the goals you ve written down. Which ones are most important to you? Some
goals are more meaningful than others. Start with those.

Next, determine whether your goals are short-term (less than six months), medium-term
(yearly), or long-range (more than three years). Be sure you have at least one long-term goal.
Long-term goals give you direction.

Finally, categorize your goals. Are they individual? Family? Are they about work or home?
Financial? Spiritual? Health? Personal development? A life out of balance is like a car without
four tires. You keep your life aligned by striving for all of the things you want out of your life.
You re checking here to make sure that you re planning for a balanced life.

You ll find a form to classify your goals toward the end of this workbook.

Step 3: Explain the importance of your goals.
This step accomplishes two things:

   1. It confirms that this goal is truly worthy of your attention, and

   2. It will give you fuel later when you re running on empty. You ll have a reminder about
      why you wanted to accomplish this goal.

You ll pick one of your goals and list all of the reasons why it s important for you to reach it. List
as many as you want, but you should be able to find at least three reasons why attaining this
goal will make a difference to you.

Tip: You may want to start with one goal. Make it easy and relatively short-term.
Then repeat the process several times. In no time, you will have developed the habit
of setting and achieving your goals. You ll be ready to move on to more
challenging ones.

Step 4: Action items
Now you re ready to move beyond the outcome and start thinking about HOW you ll accomplish
your goal. This is an important step.

List all the actions required, step-by-step, to reach your goal. For every single action, set a due
date you re establishing milestones. Milestones help you know that you re on track to achieve
your ultimate goal because you re hitting your sub-goals.

Obviously, the shorter the time frame to accomplish your main goal, the more likely it is that
your list of action items will be short as well. Longer-term goals probably require the most
planning here.

You ll find a form to enter your action items toward the end of this workbook.

Tip: Start first with longer term goals and break them down. If you start with short-
term goals, you won t have any direction.

Step 5: Goal statement
This is what you re working toward    the finished product.

In a single, concise paragraph, state your goal, the reasons why you must reach it, and the
actions required to attain it.

Your goal statement is your narrative that will keep you pumped up to reach your goal.

You ll find a blank form at the end of this workbook.


Step 6: Internalize your goals.
Action item
First thing every morning, read your Goal Statement. Read it again right before turning out the
lights at night. DO IT EVERY DAY until it seeps into your subconscious mind.

Action item
Vividly imagine the desired outcome. Use all your relevant senses.

       What does it feel like?
       What does it look like?
       What does it sound like?
       What does it smell like?
       What does it taste like?

Action item
See in your mind the actions necessary to obtain the goal.

       How does it feel to complete the goal?
       Feel the confidence.
       Begin each day with each goal completed.
       Picture yourself performing each remaining task required to reach your goal.
       Feel the confidence and the power.



Your daily actions need not be profound or heroic, but they must be consistent and
persistent. Every day!

  • 4. Why goals are so important Do you remember the conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat? Alice I just wanted to ask you which way I ought to go. Cheshire Cat: Well, that depends on where you want to get to. Alice: Oh, it really doesn t matter ... Cheshire Cat: Then it really doesn t matter which way you go! We all remember Lewis Carroll s great book, and the movie Disney made. And how clearly we get the point from Alice. Goals set our direction. They make our decisions easier because we know where we re trying to go. People without goals tend to drift. They may work hard, but they re usually disappointed with the result. They don t feel fulfilled. Goals help guide you and keep you focused on what you NEED to do, which may differ from what you want to do at that moment. The only way to measure your progress is to have something to measure! Without goals, you won t hold yourself accountable. You will live your life based on your feelings, rather than your purpose. Well-written goals turn intangible fantasies into tangible benchmarks. You know what you re trying to accomplish every day. More importantly, you know why it s so important for you to do it. You see your future and it depends on you today! Along those lines, goals provide comfort when things get tough.   • 5. Step 1: State your goals Think SMART when it comes to your goals. SMART is an acronym for: Specific Exactly what are you striving for? Measurable How will you know when you have reached your goal? Action-oriented Do you have the authority and influence to achieve your goal? Realistic Is your goal achievable? Time & resource constrained When will your reach your goal? Are the needed resources available to you? With Step 1, we re focusing on the result. It s important to start with the desired outcome. At this point, don t worry about how you ll accomplish it. You re focused on what you want to do. Let s look at two examples of how to state your goals. The first column isn t really a goal at all. The second column shows two examples of the same idea written SMART. NOT SMART SMART Goal Increase sales this year Increase sales 25% this year without spending more on advertising Buy a car Buy a car without increasing my monthly payments by April 30 Toward the end of this workbook, you ll find a complete form that you can use to write down your goals.   • 6. Step 2: Classify your goals. First, prioritize the goals you ve written down. Which ones are most important to you? Some goals are more meaningful than others. Start with those. Next, determine whether your goals are short-term (less than six months), medium-term (yearly), or long-range (more than three years). Be sure you have at least one long-term goal. Long-term goals give you direction. Finally, categorize your goals. Are they individual? Family? Are they about work or home? Financial? Spiritual? Health? Personal development? A life out of balance is like a car without four tires. You keep your life aligned by striving for all of the things you want out of your life. You re checking here to make sure that you re planning for a balanced life. You ll find a form to classify your goals toward the end of this workbook. Step 3: Explain the importance of your goals. This step accomplishes two things: 1. It confirms that this goal is truly worthy of your attention, and 2. It will give you fuel later when you re running on empty. You ll have a reminder about why you wanted to accomplish this goal. You ll pick one of your goals and list all of the reasons why it s important for you to reach it. List as many as you want, but you should be able to find at least three reasons why attaining this goal will make a difference to you. If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected. Henry David Thoreau Tip: You may want to start with one goal. Make it easy and relatively short-term. Then repeat the process several times.   • 7. Step 4: Action items Now you re ready to move beyond the outcome and start thinking about HOW you ll accomplish your goal. This is an important step. List all the actions required, step-by-step, to reach your goal. For every single action, set a due date you re establishing milestones. Milestones help you know that you re on track to achieve your ultimate goal because you re hitting your sub-goals. Obviously, the shorter the time frame to accomplish your main goal, the more likely it is that your list of action items will be short as well. Longer-term goals probably require the most planning here. You ll find a form to enter your action items toward the end of this workbook.   • 8. Step 5: Goal statement This is what you re working toward the finished product. In a single, concise paragraph, state your goal, the reasons why you must reach it, and the actions required to attain it. Your goal statement is your narrative that will keep you pumped up to reach your goal. You ll find a blank form at the end of this workbook. Step 6: Internalize your goals. Action item First thing every morning, read your Goal Statement. Read it again right before turning out the lights at night. DO IT EVERY DAY until it seeps into your subconscious mind. Action item Vividly imagine the desired outcome. Use all your relevant senses. What does it feel like? What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it smell like? What does it taste like? Action item See in your mind the actions necessary to obtain the goal. How does it feel to complete the goal? Feel the confidence. Begin each day with each goal completed. Picture yourself performing each remaining task required to reach your goal. Feel the confidence and the power.
