2. SHOT ONE
Here we are shown a long shot of a forest with the members of the band
walking past. Settings like this is a typical convention for indie bands, the
high key lighting drains out the colour from the leaves and makes the shot
actually look quite dull, which is another convention.
3. SHOT TWO
An establishing shot is used to show us where the band are at, we aren’t
told what this building is but the girls surrounding it show that is could be
an all girls school, however it is left ambiguous and for us to figure it out.
The colors are bright and from the outside, it looks like a welcoming place,
all of the girls outside look happy and look as if they’re having fun, as they
are playing games and the girl closest to the camera is trampolining.
4. SHOT THREE
A long shot is used to show two girls standing at the end of a hall way outside,
the doors slowly open without anyone touching them, this gives an usual dream
like feeling, which is quite a typical convention for indie music videos.
There is high key lighting coming in from outside, but the hallway itself is left very dark.
5. SHOT FOUR
A point of view shot is used looking into a mirror as the lead singer opens the
door into the room, the mise en scene shows the old fashioned type building,
which is neat and vintage. Vintage places and vintage clothing are quite a
typical convention for the genre. The composition shows only half of the mirror
and the piano next to it, it’s as if we’re looking into half of something that isn’t real,
and outside of the mirror is the real world. Again, surrealism is used.
6. SHOT FIVE
This shot shows two girls in the frame, shallow focus is used to blur out
the girl in the foreground, however we can still work out what is in her
hand, this shot gives off a surreal feeling which is quite a typical
convention.
7. SHOT SIX
Another long shot is used to show three girls standing around a girl who is kneeling,
high key lighting shines through a window for a couple of seconds to light up the room
as one of the girls cuts off the kneeling girls hair. The unusual, dreamlike feeling is
shown again because the high key lighting makes things look blurred and hazy.
8. SHOT SEVEN
Between 2:50 and 3:15, we are shown the places in the building and the
girls that we have already seen, this makes us wonder what is going to
happen to each of the girls that look in trouble. In this shot below, the
girl is more centered here and we can only see a small part of the girl
who had the gun in her hand, the buildup of seeing this scene more than
once makes us wonder if the plan was to shoot the apple but because
of uneasy, sinister feeling in the building, we wonder whether she will
just shoot the girl instead.
9. SHOT EIGHT
In this shot, we are shown the lead singer from behind as he opens the door to
see two girls, one is on the floor and the other is stood beating her with a stick.
This is were we first see the reality of how sinister the building is and how cruel
the people are inside of it. A shallow focus is used to blur out the singer and show
what is happening in front of him.
10. SHOT NINE
Between 3:38 and 3:58 we are shown various medium shots of all the girls we have
seen throughout the video turn to face the camera. Some of the girls look directly
toward the camera, which makes things feel even more uncomfortable.
I think that the main story behind this song and video is that things aren’t always as
they seem and from the outside, things can be very deceiving.
