Anne Markusen - How Do We Know Creative Placemaking is Working?
Ann Markusen is Director of the Arts Economy Initiative and the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Principal of Markusen Economic Research. She is a researcher, frequent public speaker, and advisor to public agencies, policymakers, businesses, economic developers, and nonprofit organizations across the US, in Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia and Brazil. Her expertise is in economic development at the state and local level, where she brings analytical skills to bear on the ways that industries and occupations shape possibilities for creating good work. Markusen is currently serving as research and writing consultant for the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs.
Markusen’s research and policy work has also been directly toward pressing economic development issues at national and local scales, including business tax incentives (Reining in the Competition for Capital, 2007), minimum wage legislation, military industrial conversion (Arming the Future: a Defense Industry for the 20th Century, 1999; Dismantling the Cold War Economy, 1992; The Rise of the Gunbelt, 1991) high tech job growth (High Tech America 1985), energy boomtowns, and state/local public finance. Over the years, her op eds have been published in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor and many regional dallies, and she has been a frequent radio and television commentator.

The project is led by Dr Owain Jones of CCRI with Dr. Bettina van Hoven Department of Cultural Geography, Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. Gwenda’s PhD is one of the exciting outcomes of this research network.

For a community to thrive, there must be awareness and appreciation of diversity in culture, ethnicity, religion, ages, disabilities and contributions of all, as well as recognition of the historical struggles and urban development within the community. Just as a musical composition draws strength from the distinct sounds of individual instruments, a community gains strength from the diversity of its people and resources.

Foresight as a core competence

Dropwizard at Yammer
Yammer has been using Dropwizard since 2011 to power many of its services. It started with 3 services using Dropwizard and related libraries like Jersey and Jackson. By 2014, Yammer had over 30 services using Dropwizard running on over 170 nodes. These services store data in databases like PostgreSQL, Cassandra, and Berkeley DB, with caching done using Memcache. Yammer has built its own deployment service using Dropwizard to deploy services across at least 2 nodes for high availability and zero downtime deployments. Services are monitored using tools like Check MK, Ganglia, load balancers, and Hystrix for visibility into metrics and failures.

Establishing clear career goals enables professionals to focus their efforts on developing specific skills, gaining relevant experience, and making strategic decisions that align with their desired career trajectory. By setting both short-term and long-term objectives, individuals can systematically track their progress, make necessary adjustments, and stay motivated. Suzanne Lagerweij - Influence Without Power - Why Empathy is Your Best Friend...
This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
