Understanding place value is an essential skill that every student must know in order to do a variety of math concepts
including, but not limited to rounding whole numbers and decimals, comparing whole numbers and decimals and adding and
subtracting decimals. This tutorial will review the concept of place value and how it can improve your math over all math skills.

What is Place Value?
The value of a digit depends on its place in a number.
This is its place value.
Example: Look at number 444
The 4 in the hundreds place equal 400
The 4 in tens place equal 40
The 4 in the ones place equal 4
You can see from the place value chart
that the hundreds place is ten times more
than the tens place. And the tens place
is ten times more than the ones place.
Place value is the basis of our entire number system. A place value system is one in which the position of a digit in a number determines
its value. In the standard system, called base ten, each place represents ten times the value of the place to its right. You can think of this
as making groups of ten of the smaller unit and combining them to make a new unit.

When learning whole number place values you start with the place all the way to the right. First you have the ones place, then the tens
place, then the hundreds place. You then move on to the thousands place, the ten thousands place, the hundred thousands place, and
finally the millions place.

A decimal is a fraction (not a whole number) whose denominator is a power of ten. When writing a decimal, the numerator is expressed by
figures placed to the right of a decimal point. Starting with the first place to the right of the decimal you have the tenths place, the hundredths
place, and the thousandths place. You know a place value is a decimal when it ends with “ths” and whole numbers and decimals are separated
with a decimal point.

When writing a number, you group the whole number digits together in groups of three called periods and separate them with a
comma. The ones, tens, and hundreds, make up the ones period, the thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands
make up the thousands period, and the millions is part of the millions period.

To write a number with a decimal you write the whole number exactly the same grouping the periods with a comma, then to separate the
whole numbers from the decimals you place a decimal point between them,

When reading a number, read the number then say the same of the period, starting with the period to the left and working to the right. This number would be
read “Two Million, four hundred eighty-one thousand, nine hundred seventy-five.” When you read and write whole numbers, don’t say the word and. In math, the
word and means you have a decimal point. That’s why when you write a check, you save the word and for the number of cents, which is expressed as a decimal
or fraction.
