This is a new research published last week -- first to look specifically at voice and news. Reuters Institute part of Oxford University. We do independent research into issues relating to journalism and I should point out right at the start that Google supports out work, they didn’t have any role in selecting this topic or editorial input. I gave the three main platforms equal opportunity to participate in this research.
So what did we find? Firstly, very fast growth – the first two data points from the DNR – the second from this special survey – but what we see is more doubling from 2017 to 2018 and then similar growth rate in last six months – between Jan and sept
The age profile interesting – a bit older and in the UK – a real bump in terms of usage with older groups due to simplicity of interaction with these devices.
This is question we asked just int eh UK about what featrues people using (the blue) and the ones that are most valued
ANI – and can see that most people using to access music, simple questions and weather and alarms – news is there 46% use it regularly but when It comes to the most important feature – just 1% for news ….
Within news got interactive conversational news (very little), news updates (give me news and live sradio and podcasts – so important to separate these out.
So firstly the news briefing option – this is where up until now we have little idea what is going on. Our survey suggests that although almost half using monthly only aabout a fifth use daily - in other words 80 % of smart speaker users aren’t using regualrly and in the US even fewer
And reasons when we pressed 50% said that they could find news easily elswhere - others complained about the format, the up to date ness of this material, poor production. Essentially a lot of it is not very good or doesn’t deliver enough value – for some at least:
But important to note that this not just about smart speakers, last few months we’ve seen flurry of launches of speakers with screen, Google Home Hub, Facebook portal with Alexa inside
Already mentioned phones and then the headphones like Bose ones here that now have assistants inside them – so literally ask fro those thing in your ear – and then coming to cars – BM announcing own assistant but also integrating the big platforms and then $50 echo – Amazon announced voice controlled microwave too this autumn … so point is that voice is going to be ubiquitous, embedded into everything – and that’s why it will be so important.
