New Horizons members are often
greeted by Francesca Bertolli’s
warm smile at New Horizon’s
reception desk. She joined in
August 2010, and has volunteered
for several activities, often assisting
in the IT suite and leading the
Italian Conversation activity in
Bradbury Orangery Café, Monday
mornings.
Francesca was born in Italy, lived
with her family there and in Brazil.
She has travelled widely and is
fluent in Italian, Portuguese and
now, English.
As a professional dancer and
choreographer she has performed
and been acclaimed in many
countries worldwide. Her first
stage experience was in Rome in
1979. Her fond memories include,
in 1999, performing in the Solari
Vanzi Company theatrical version of
‘Le Baccanti’ by Euripides (Rome,
Teatro Romano di Ostia Antica).
She still remembers the chilly
wind at the open air stage during
that summer festival, and the ‘pine
tree’ aroma. Francesca passionately
believes in expression through
movement as an interpretation of
how each of us communicates our
individuality. This has been
constant through all her
contemporary dance teaching
projects since 1983.
Francesca enjoys practising Tai
Chi, Yoga, Pilates and Feldenkrais –
Awareness Through Movement. She
likes holistic therapies and has
recently qualified as a therapist in
Indian Head Massage which she
began in September at New
Horizons.
“I believe the secret is to listen
and learn from nature in all its
glory. As a human being I am
always striving to exceed my limits
and achieve perfection ... I also
realise that to reach these limits is
also not always achievable.”

Roshan’s Review
New Horizons members had a whale of
a time at the Summer Party. But some
members asked me why tickets now cost
£10. The event includes the finger food
buffet, drinks, entertainment, tutors,
raffle prizes, etc. Some professional
performers give their time for free. The
cost is subsidized from our general fund.
I believe that we are providing a very high
quality event at good value.
I’m asking members to continue their
financial support for our centre. We still
need to build up our funds for the year.
You can donate by setting up a regular
standing order at your bank, text, cheque
or cash. If you are a taxpayer, please pick
up and sign a Gift Aid form from
reception – which boosts your gift.
Consider leaving a legacy in your will to
benefit New Horizons.
Recently I needed to remind
members that New Horizons has a policy
prohibiting staff and tutors from
accepting personal gifts and money.
Chocolates and cakes that can be shared
are always welcome. But please do not
offer any personal presents to staff.
Instead, please mark your appreciation
with a donation to the New Horizons
Centre. Thank you for your support.
