“a word from Andrew”
Edition 5, December 2012

~Andrew Matseke
This month signifies a convergence of quite a few important events in the life of Strike
Technologies.
Firstly, Strike Technologies celebrates its 25th year of business and in that time, our business
has grown year on year to become a significant product developer and supplier in the local and
export markets. I am immensely proud to have been associated with this business and see it
as the highlight of my career to date. Secondly, we have just completed our first year in the
new building. Despite a few hiccups in the beginning we have settled down to become part
of the furniture in the TIS/Strike building. I would like to thank Andrew and his entire team for
making us feel welcome and allowing us to make your building our new home. The move to
the new building gave us the opportunity to streamline our factory and focus on our customers
better.
Lastly, we are on the cusp of finalising the new business that will be Powertech System
Integrators. This new business will be a significant force in the engineering solutions landscape
of South and Southern Africa and I am personally very excited about the people of our three
businesses at IST, TIS and Strike Technologies coming together to create a new powerhouse
business. This change is going to affect all of us and I encourage each of you to embrace this
change and realise that it is an opportunity to be part of something very special. To all of the
staff of Strike Technologies and TIS, I wish you a peaceful and restful break with your families.
The December break is always for me a special time that I get to spend with my family and
helps me recharge my spirit and batteries for the New Year. We have worked hard this year
and have shown passion for our business. May it continue in the New Year.
God bless. ~James
Do you know the words?
...then sing along!
The TIS team cycled the 40 km 94.7 race on the
10th off November this year. Our team included
Linda Dreyer khakane Motaung ,Tommie Norje,
Gerda Roets , Gavin Dick, Silas Moloko, Masete
Maradu, Rudi Gouws, Herman Muller and his
daughter. Everybody enjoyed the event and
it was a good race. For the beginners it was a
good learning experience to see what the race
was all about and the feedback from them was
very positive and they are all looking forward to
the next one!
Powering through the City!
It is incredible that the year 2012 is coming to an end! I would like to wish
TIS employees and their families a blessed end to 2012 and a prosperous
and successful 2013.
Let us all remember that Project Align, the organizational renewal process
that was initiated by Powertech, affecting TIS, IST and Strike Technologies,
is intended to kick off a process of business growth starting in the 2013/14
financial year. Use the break for the festive season to rest, and come back
with renewed energy in 2013. We will all need the energy to achieve the
objectives for 2013.
... and now a word from James”
Thank you Andrew Matseke, Silas Moloko and Tyco for the sponsorship of our cycling gear, it was
an honour riding in them which contributed to a great team spirit and a good team effort on the day.
It was good to see hard work and practice being done for the 94.7. Linda, Gavin, Tommie & Gerda
we hope you keep on cycling and join us for the next 94.7 race in 2013!
Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring, making spirits bright
O what fun it is to laugh and sing, a sleighing song tonight
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride, in a one horse open sleigh, heh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride, in a one horse open sleigh!

Powertech Golf Day
Page 2
The annual Powertech golf day was held on the 7 November
at the Kyalami Country Club this year. The theme for
this year was the Olympics which of course originated in
Greece.
TIS was there
in full force and the TIS
team did a great job in
decorating their allocated
hole.
It was a successful event as
always which saw all our
customers and staff enjoy a
fun day out on the greens!
Infinera & TIS at Africa Com
The Africa Com exhibition was
held at the Capetown International
conventional centre from the 13-14
November 2012. TIS together with
Infinera hosted a dinner at the Groot
Constantia wine estate for some of
our customers.
The evening included wine tasting
and a musical performance by a Jazz
duo. This turned out to be a hugely
successful event facilitating more
relevant discussions with a number
of our clients in and around Africa.
Andrew Matseke , Thato Dipudi as
well as the Infinera team did a great
job at the Africa com 2012!
Theme: Demystifying the NRS 053
Venue: Eskom Conference Centre, Edgemead, Cape Town
Date: 5th December 2012
“The raison d’etre for this presentation was that I felt that the NRS 053 in its current form is too
complicated and cumbersome for people in specification writing capacity to use as a guideline
when writing tender specifications. I therefore simplified the NRS 053 in a much easier to use
matrix format, thereby making it a user friendly, application specific document.
The presentation was therefore aimed at decision making people in a specification capacity in
Eskom, Municipalities, Contractors, Large Power Users and Consulting Engineers. Silas Moloko,
David Bavin and Tommie Nortje also flew in from Johannesburg to attend.
The feedback was overwhelming; I’ve already been invited to do follow up presentations at two
of the major Consulting Engineers in Cape Town. As a result of this, Adenco Construction (one of
the largest Contractors in the WC), also requested to meet with me last Friday and subsequently
re-opened their account with us.
My next presentation will be in February/March next year on the implementation of the SANS
10198 specification. I already have a number of people that confirmed their attendance for that
presentation.”

Fishing for gold!
Andre Kruger from T.I.S. Mpumalanga region was selected as a member of the
Mpumalanga National Deep Sea Fishing team this year. A team consists of 3
anglers and he was selected as a member of the B team. This year the competition
took place in Durban during the second week of October. Andre says that the fishing
was very tough as they had to travel long distances on the water to get to good
fishing spots.
This was a 5 day competition with one day fishing (day and night) from 10am in
the morning to 10 pm at night. Big Musellcrackers and Cob (Kabeljou) was caught
and he landed a 18KG Cob on a 10kg line. (see photo) The highlight of the day
however, was at the price giving when the B team managed to beat the A team
finish 7th overall as well as 2nd place for the inland provinces. André has been
fishing since 1975 when he bought his first fishing rod with his very first salary. As
a sportsman he has represented Mpumalanga in 3 different sports, he plays rugby,
was a member of the Light tackle fishing team and now as of late is a fully fledged
member of the Deep sea team.
One of his dreams are still to land his first Marlin and to have a “huisie by die see”
(little house at the coast)!
Well done Andre – that was a big one!
Merry Christmas
and may all of you have a happy and
peaceful festive season with your
families.
Be safe, Drive Safe
and Enjoy!

COMMERCIAL FEATURE
he TIS Energy Services team was called in to assist in
an unusual engineering dilemma faced by the consulting
engineer of Actom Power Transformers.
When the new building for the 300 kV test bay at Actom
Power Transformers deviated significantly from the drawing,
there was insufficient inter-phase clearance and phase-earth
clearance in the 80 kV busbar duct .
The TIS Energy Services team was called in to assist with
the insulation of the busbars, which it was planned to do with the
Raysulate material. The busbars themselves were insulated with
standard Raysulate shrink sleeve, but the insulation pieces for
the busbar clamps were especially designed and fitted for this
purpose. All this insulation is rated for 33 kV operating voltage
and provided enough inter-phase insulation, together with the
existing air gaps, to cater for the 80 kV busbars.
SOLUTION FOR INTER-PHASE
CLEARANCE PROBLEM
However, the phase to earth insulation required further
attention. After consulting its partners in Germany on how TIS
was going to tackle this unusual application of the Raysulate
product range, it was suggested to apply a layer of Raysulate
to the wall. A curtain of insulation 5.0 m wide and 10 m long
was made especially to fit the wall.
Insulating the wall provides sufficient phase-earth
clearance, together with the air gaps, to cater for the 80 kV
busbars in the reduced busbar duct and allows the current
building structure to still be used as originally planned.
Thanks to the Energy Services team, led by Rudi Gouws,
TIS was able to produce a tailor-made solution to solve
the dilemma. This could not have been achieved without
careful planning, research and execution by the team in
record time. ESI
