5. MBDA
Product: Storm Shadow Cruise Missile
Contract: Contract value is £8m over a four-year
period.
Investment: £1.2m
Storm Shadow is a newly developed European designed
and built Cruise Missile. Newburgh produces the main
body of the missile plus various smaller parts, which are
assembled to the main body prior to delivery.
Newburgh invested in the region of £1.2m in setting up a
bespoke facility for manufacture of these parts.
Purchases include 3off CNC machining centres, the
largest being 8 metres in length, CMM inspection
machine, automated fluorescent dye penetrant
inspection facility and painting and slush coating
facilities.
History:
Newburgh had the capability to produce the prototype
parts in our existing core machining facility. We
suggested to our customer that cellular manufacture was
the correct route for future production quantities. After
producing a detailed cost model for the cell and
identifying the correct machinery, equipment and
processes we shared this information with the customer.
A long-term contract was negotiated which justified our
investment and gave the customer guaranteed security
of supply. The cell is now fully operational and product
quality is outstanding with deliveries continually to
program.
6. Spearfish
Product: Spearfish Torpedo Hull Sections- Newburgh
produced five of the eight hull sections that make up
a Spearfish heavyweight Torpedo.
Contract value: £2.4m over a three-year period.
Investment: £650k
Newburgh’s investment included procurement of a CNC
twin pallet horizontal machining centre, CNC vertical
turning machine and CNC Co-ordinate measuring machine
in temperature controlled environment.
Newburgh was processing a number of operations on
these parts to assist our customer in getting back onto
delivery program. Our customer could not produce these
parts to specification with their existing plant and were
looking at the feasibility of investing in new facilities.
Newburgh suggested that we set up a cell for manufacture
of these parts; this would enable the customer to solve
their problems without capital expenditure.
After producing a detailed cost model for the cell and
identifying the correct machinery, equipment and
processes we presented our proposal to the customer. A
contract was negotiated which justified our investment
and gave the customer guaranteed security of supply. We
brought deliveries back onto program and produced what
the customer described as “the best hulls ever”.
7. Bloodhound SSC
Product: Bloodhound SSC 1000mph car
Association: Newburgh Engineering is a product
sponsor of the Bloodhound SSC project in their attempt
to break the land speed world record. Bloodhound SSC
is a pioneering research and development programme
in the UK, created to design and build a supersonic car
that will break the 1000mph barrier. Newburgh
Engineering have been heavily involved with the
educational aspect of the project, teaching students
about the research, design, build and testing of the car
throughout many schools in the region through our
very own network of Bloodhound SSC Ambassadors. As
a core value of Bloodhound SSC and Newburgh
Engineering, education and engagement for students in
projects such as this is integral and critically important
for the sustainability of the industry.
As Vincent Middleton (MD) explains, "We are delighted
to be product sponsors of the Bloodhound SSC project.
This is a high precision venture, in which we have the
capability and expertise to deliver the required product
performance and will ensure complete product
integrity. Our team of highly skilled engineers are
extremely excited about working on this iconic project
and we all can’t wait for Bloodhound SSC to make
history”.
Bloodhound SSC will be attempting the World Record in
South Africa in Summer 2015.
8. Man of Steel
Product: Man of Steel
Association: Newburgh have collaborated with
talented local sculptor and former engineer, Steve
Medhi on his Yorkshire Man of Steel project, Man of
Steel. Sitting pensively on an 18 metre coal-like
plinth, the privately funded 30 metre Man is a
representation of STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) and a celebration of the
thousands of coal and steel industry workers in the
South Yorkshire region. Newburgh Engineering will
be helping convert Steve Medhi’s concept into
reality over the next couple of years by assisting
building the 20 metre Man, taking the project from
its current stage of design through to completion.
The sculpture will be situated on the Rotherham-
Sheffield border at the side of the M1 with over 65
million people viewing ‘him’ every year.
