New York
New York is on the east coast of
the United States, in the state of
New York. It is the biggest city in
the state – in fact, with over 10
million people it is the biggest city in
the United States – but it is not
the state capital.

New York id divided on five areas known as “boroughs”: Manhattan, Queens, the
Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

NY is famous for its skyscrapers. The first
one was built around 100 years ago. It was the
perfect place for skyscrapers: on a small
island all you can do is go-up. Most of
skyscrapers are in the central area of
Manhattan, called “midtown”. Some of the city’s
most famous buildings are: The Empire State Building, The Flatiron Building, The
Chrysler Building, and the World Trade Center (destroyed on September 11, 2001).
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from
people of France in 1884. At first it stood in
Paris, and then it was brought to the US
in pieces.

My favorite sight is The Brooklyn Bridge. Tourists
can walk across to the beautiful neighborhood of
Brooklyn Heights. The walk back to Manhattan is
even better, with wonderful views of the city.

New Yorkers can fully enjoy green,
open spaces. In the middle of the city
is Central Park, where you can walk,
ride a bike, listen to live music, take
a boat in one of the five lakes or
visit Belvedere Castle. Smaller, but
also important parks are:
Washington Square Park, Gramercy
Park and Coney Island.

On the other hand NY is quite dangerous city. There are many thieves and criminals
on the streets. You shouldn’t carry a lot of money or jewelry and you should
always know where you are going.
In NY there is plenty ways of travel:

The Subway (It is the fastest and cheapest way to get around NY, but you cannot see
     the city.)

     yellow taxis
Cars (It is not easy to have a car in the city and there is not enough parking spaces.)
Buses (They can be a great way to see the city, but they are often slow.)
Ferries (The ferry is free and gives a wonderful view of the Statue of Liberty.)
     Walking

New York is one of my favorite cities. I hope I will visit New York soon. But for
now I’ll watch next episodes of Friends and Gossip Girl and admire the views of
New York on my computer screen.
