The Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer Network (ESKTN) aims to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy by connecting businesses, universities, and government agencies. It focuses on emerging environmental technologies and is funded by the UK government, so membership is free. Key priority areas include sustainable land management, food production, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and natural capital. The ESKTN works with initiatives like the UK National Ecosystem Assessment, which evaluates the economic value of ecosystem services, and the Natural Capital Initiative to engage businesses in sustainability. An upcoming workshop will bring together business and academic partners to develop collaboration opportunities.
1) Germany is undergoing an energy transition called "Energiewende" characterized by phasing out nuclear and coal power and increasing renewable energy sources like wind power. However, local acceptance of wind turbines is declining due to concerns about impacts on landscapes, health, and property values.
2) Acceptance of renewable energy projects is higher when local communities are involved in development and perceive projects as contributing to climate protection and local identity. Improving communication about climate impacts and coordinating policies could boost acceptance.
3) Guidelines for "fair wind energy", citizen energy funds, and neutral advisors can help address concerns, build trust, and promote local participation and benefits in the energy transition.
Solutions for Energy Management & Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in ICT field ICT FOOTPRINT .eu
The document outlines a webinar on solutions for energy management and life cycle assessment in the ICT sector, including presentations on monitoring energy performance in data centers, the ecoinvent database for life cycle inventory data, and the ICTFOOTPRINT.eu initiative to promote sustainability in the ICT sector through metrics, methodologies and best practices.
This document summarizes Dionysia Adamantidou's master's thesis which analyzes the cost-effective deployment of wind energy projects between Belgium and Denmark through potential cross-border cooperation. The author conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing two hypothetical wind farm projects, one in Belgium and one in Denmark. The results showed that while the cost difference was small, the wind farm installation in Denmark was the least-cost solution. However, the author notes that a full cost-benefit analysis is still needed to determine if cross-border cooperation between the two countries should be further developed, as the analysis was limited and other economic and political factors need consideration.

The document summarizes the milestones of Rainforestation initiatives in the Philippines from 1990 to 2010. It describes how Rainforestation started as a concept of close canopy and high diversity farming systems at Visayas State University in 1990. Several pilot sites were established between 1992-1995. It gained recognition through partnerships with government agencies and NGOs from 2002-2004. It has now expanded to over 800 hectares across many regions of the Philippines through training programs and typologies adapted to different landscapes. Challenges include the need for more advocacy, research on species matching, and financial resources to further scale up Rainforestation efforts nationwide.

HubSpot is a leader in inbound marketing but seeks to accelerate growth and increase profits. It currently has 1,000 customers but high customer acquisition costs. The document proposes segmenting customers into Owners and Marketers and adjusting pricing plans. For Owners, it suggests incentivizing use of CMS and annual contracts. For Marketers, it recommends focusing on analytics, raising prices, and demonstrating inbound marketing success. New pricing forecasts increased lifetime profits per customer for both segments.

This document summarizes several selection and retouching tools in Photoshop including the marquee, lasso, and magic wand tools for making selections and the clone stamp, blur, sharpen, smudge, dodge, burn, and sponge tools for retouching images. The marquee tools allow for rectangular, elliptical, single row, and single column selections. The lasso tools create irregular selections through freehand, polygonal, or magnetic paths. The magic wand selects areas of similar color. The clone stamp duplicates areas, blur and sharpen smooth or enhance edges, and the dodge and burn tools lighten or darken specific tones. The smudge and sponge tools blend and adjust saturation respectively.
This document provides an introduction to using Adobe Photoshop. It discusses what Photoshop is, how it can be used for publications, websites, and video/digital materials. It also covers starting Photoshop, the interface including menus and tools, understanding layers and how to work with layers, common file formats like JPEG and TIFF, creating image archives, and image resolution. The document serves as a beginner's guide for getting familiar with the Photoshop environment and basic image editing and manipulation tasks.
As humans, we never fail to think that we are highly intelligent beings, and that we are mentally superior than any other creatures found on Earth.
Well, that...... may be true.
However, we can be equally stupid and dumb too.
Worse still, we don't even realize it - in terms of how we can make erroneous judgments, decisions and choices, based on how our mind processes and filters information, as well as how our belief system works.
As intriguing and exciting this topic is to me, I find it difficult to illustrate the concepts involve, and that took me nearly 6 months to complete this work. (The Planning Fallacy in play?!) Throughout writing this deck, I've made a total of 8 major revisions before coming to this final piece.

This document discusses potential synergies between forestry and Natura2000, the EU network of protected areas. It outlines several pan-European initiatives related to sustainable forest management and EU directives focused on habitat and species conservation. While guidelines have been established, the document notes that wood production remains the main goal of most forest management. Only 4% of European forests are undisturbed by humans. It questions whether efforts so far have put the EU on track to achieve its 2020 Biodiversity Strategy goals for forests and synergies with Natura2000.
This chapter provides an overview of the European Commission's involvement in forestry activities within Europe and globally. It explains that forests provide vital economic and environmental services and that the EU is committed to sustainable forest management both within its borders and internationally. The chapter outlines the EU's forested area and increasing forest coverage, and notes the EU's objectives to promote sustainable development of the forestry sector, protect the natural environment, and ensure forests play a role in environmental benefits like carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.

The Future of SFM in the Paneuropean RegionForest Europe
The document summarizes the work of FOREST EUROPE over the past 20 years to promote sustainable forest management (SFM) across Europe. It discusses new challenges facing European forests from climate change and increasing demands. FOREST EUROPE's vision is for all European forests to provide goods, services, and contribute to sustainable development. Its mission is to enhance cooperation on forest policies and secure SFM. Goals and targets were adopted at the Oslo Ministerial Conference to achieve this vision by 2020 through national programs and strategies. FOREST EUROPE will continue working to achieve these goals and fulfill its mission to develop policies and tools for SFM, monitor commitments, and promote education and awareness.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry organized a Finnish-Swedish Forest Friends Forever Conference in Hanaholmen, Espoo on 17-18 April. Biodiversity and natural capital within green economyMarianne Kettunen
This document discusses key concepts related to green economy, natural capital, and ecosystem services. It defines a green economy as one that improves human well-being and reduces environmental risks through approaches that are low-carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive. Natural capital and ecosystem services are important components of a green economy. The document advocates for integrating natural capital and ecosystem services into sectoral policies to operationalize the "green" aspects of a green economy. It provides examples of how protected areas can contribute to food security, disaster risk reduction, and the green economy. Overall, the document argues that a truly green economy requires understanding and valuing natural capital and ecosystem services, and integrating them into decision making across all economic sectors.

Tools and Approaches for Mainstreaming Biodiversity in the EU, Laure ledoux, ...OECD Environment
This document summarizes tools and approaches for mainstreaming biodiversity considerations in the EU. It discusses the EU biodiversity strategy, financing biodiversity through the EU budget, private sector involvement, and knowledge tools like Mapping and Assessing Ecosystems and Services and natural capital accounting. The goal is to integrate biodiversity into all relevant policies and better understand the economic value of nature to support decision making. Progress has been made but bolder action is still needed to meet biodiversity targets and halt the loss of natural capital in Europe.
20 years of SFM in the pan-European regionForest Europe
FOREST EUROPE is an intergovernmental organization established in 1990 that promotes sustainable forest management across Europe. It consists of 46 member countries and the European Union who cooperate on developing strategies to protect and manage forests. Over the past 20 years, FOREST EUROPE has established guidelines and criteria for sustainable forest management, defined the concept of SFM, conducted periodic assessments of Europe's forests, and contributed to increased forest area and slowed biodiversity loss in Europe. Currently, FOREST EUROPE is working to further develop tools for SFM, monitor forest resources, address illegal logging, and provide support for negotiations on a legally binding agreement on European forests.
This webinar discusses the European Commission's reflection paper on implementing the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The presentation considers three possible scenarios for the EU's approach: 1) an overarching SDG strategy coordinated across EU members, 2) mainstreaming SDGs across all EU policies without enforcing member action, or 3) implementing SDGs only through external policies. Key policy areas like the circular economy, sustainable agriculture and food, and clean energy are examined. While the reflection paper has promising elements, it lacks concrete funding commitments and measures in some areas. The EU's leadership in achieving the global goals will depend on how the new Commission and Parliament decide to implement the strategies.
Ahead of the publication of this year's country recommendations for the European Semester, this paper identifies priorities and modalities for the reform of the Semester so that it becomes a key instrument for operationalising the SDGs and implementing the European Green Deal at Member State level.

Finland has 20 years of experience using criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management. The document outlines Finland's forest statistics, the development of criteria and indicators at the European level, and how Finland has applied the pan-European criteria through national reporting in 1997, 2000, 2007, and 2011. The criteria and indicators are used to monitor sustainable forest management, inform policy decisions, and communicate with stakeholders in Finland and internationally.
The European Environment Agency operates the Biodiversity Information System for Europe to serve as the EU's Clearing House Mechanism. It aims to promote technical cooperation on biodiversity by gathering and sharing data on habitats, species, protected areas, and tracking progress towards biodiversity targets. However, recent assessments show most European biodiversity is in poor condition. As a result, the EEA is enhancing the Biodiversity Information System to better support the implementation of policies like the EU Biodiversity Strategy and new Global Biodiversity Framework. It is working to improve data accessibility, interoperability and usefulness to inform decision-making.
The document discusses forests and forest policies in the EU. It notes that 42% of EU land is forested, totaling 178 million hectares. It also outlines several key EU and international policies that impact forests, including strategies, directives, and frameworks related to biodiversity, climate change, rural development, and more. The document notes there can be inconsistencies between policies and differences in how countries collect and define forest data. It summarizes some initiatives like FOREST EUROPE to promote sustainable forest management across Europe.
The following analysis looks at the problem areas identified in the latest State of the Environment Report and assesses how well the Green Deal’s policy proposals address the targets and objectives deemed unlikely to be met by 2020.

1. NEW FOREST STRATEGY
A STEP BACKWARD OR A STEP FORWARD?
Dr. Peri Kourakli
Forest Task Force Coordinator
Birdlife Europe
Joint meeting of the EU Standing Forestry Committee and
the EU Advisory Group on Forestry and Cork
For the discussed report, read here:
http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/fore/publi/sfc_wg7_2012_full_en.pdf
2. Who we are
BirdLife International
Largest global 90-year old partnership of
conservation organisations
Conserve birds, their habitats and global
biodiversity, working with people towards
sustainability in the use of natural resources
Hellenic Ornithological Society is the Greek
partner; established in 1982
3.
4. Good elements of the Report
The Strategy is entitled as “Forest Strategy”
instead of “Forestry Strategy”
The long- vision is in the right direction;
connecting this Strategy to other EU Strategies,
while the multifunctional role of forests is
highlighted (although it is strange that the vision in
under bullets, as if the vision has no link)
It is discussing in a logical order almost all of the
strategic priorities and objectives for social,
environmental & economic aspects of the forests
5. We are concern since:
Although multifuctionality within
forests has stated as a
prerequisite, it does not describe
how this can be achieved
The Report does not include, or
make provision for the evaluation
of the previous Forest Action Plan
6. Connection to EU Strategies:
2020 Strategy: Although the
principle of “growth” is included,
the principles of “reduce
consumption” or “resource’s
efficiency” is lacking
It does not effectively analyse the
existing EU Strategies related to
forests. This is more obvious in the
case of 2020 Biodiversity Strategy
We are concern since:
7. We are concern since:
It doesn’t provide any analysis on the EU Funds
allocated for forests , therefore not enough
information on the budget spend for all forest
services. Is subsidiary already included in the EU
Budget? (This is more obvious in the chapter “Resources
for implementation”)
Statements regarding biodiversity or other
ecosystem services had references, while
several statements for other forest services
were unsupported
8. We are concern since:
Sustainable Forest Management/ SFM
It does not provide any tools,
guidelines or suggestions on this
concept (only links with FOREST
EUROPE’s decisions)
It is not delegating responsibility for
this to the new Forest Action Plan
Example:
It does not determine how the basic levels of
SFM will be determined or how they are
going to be monitored afterwards 8//19
9. We are concern since:
Forest Package
Forest Strategy
Forest Action Plan
Communication on the wood-processing
industry and related value chains which
aims to address the challenges and
opportunities of different value chains that
have wood, wholly or partially, as a raw
material, including construction.
10. We are concern since:
Social function: missing the concept of “civil
protection”; both as a tool of supporting local
societies and as following of the EU Decisions on
establishing mechanisms to facilitate reinforced cooperation in
civil protection assistance interventions (2001/792/EC & 2007/779/EC)
Forest Information:
It states that there is common info system in EU
The role-contribution of EUROSTAT &ICP Forests in
forest info is missing
It includes recommendations but there are no final
decisions from EU & MS
11. We are concern since:
Coherence and Coordination:
It is rather conservative and general on
recommendations among EU & national policies.
If analyses on EU forest related Strategies, EU
forest funds allocation and previous Forest
Action Plan were included, it could be more
specific and effective.
HOW: Possible options & instruments/Policy options:
The suggestions of this chapter are arbitrary and
need to be supported by strong arguments.
12. We are concern since:
Monitoring and Evaluation”:
It doesn’t provide measureable
targets or indicators. It delegates to
