Human Services of disasters in the U.S. from
2001-2012 concluded that health care
providers are not adequately prepared for
disasters and emergencies

From HHS:
As we have learned from past events and disasters, the
current regulatory patchwork of federal, state, and local
laws… falls far short of what is needed to require that
health care providers and suppliers be adequately
prepared for a disaster.
…currently, in the event of a disaster, health care
providers and suppliers across the nation would not
have the necessary emergency planning and
preparation in place to adequately protect the health and
safety of their patients.

• While large hospitals may have parts of a
preparedness program in place or experienced
staff, few have comprehensive preparedness
programs to meet real world disasters
• More challenging is that most smaller facilities such
as long-term care facilities, clinics and specialized
treatment offices, etc. have less resources or
preparedness planning in place

HHS has proposed streamlined emergency
preparedness requirements in 42 CFR, Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services with the intent to:
• Improve emergency preparedness capabilities of
all medical providers and suppliers
• Consolidate and standardize emergency
preparedness regulations

annual exercises

• Development of your preparedness program will
take time and resources
• Use accepted business continuity process and
standards (NFPA 1600 or ISO 22301) to guide
implementation of your preparedness program
• Get professional assistance if you don’t have
in-house capabilities or need additional expertise
• Don’t forget to document-document-document!
