Enterprise integration: The Past, Present and FutureWSO2
If you take the last 10 years, many things have changed. The next 10 years will be no different. However, some key concepts such as integration are very unlikely to change. But, interestingly, this does not mean that you can build a system that lasts for decades, since the integration you had 10 years ago is not the kind of integration you have today and never will be the one you want to have in 10 years time.
While working with customers of varied levels of maturity there is a lot we have learned as a vendor. In this talk we will discuss how some companies managed to keep carrying their legacy baggage for decades while others were able to keep iterating to a level where they never found themselves outdated. But, just like technology, there is also an impact on the business. The more you innovate the more you may end up spending and similarly, the less you innovate the more you’d be spending again. There is a fine line between innovation and stagnation where you spend the least and gain the most. This is the perfect line of iteration that any business wants to be aligned with.
There is a lot to learn from others successes and failures and this talk is mostly focusing on that. We’ll take many case-studies to learn the past, present and future of enterprise integration and how to find the fine line of iterative improvement that best suits the kind of business you are in.

Are the teams leveraging the capabilities of the platform? What are the pain points with platform services? It can be challenging to find root cause among problem symptoms in distributed systems. Just as in real life, it's important for microservices to undergo regular health checks.
In this talk, we'll provide a systems-based approach to execute an app health check along 10 different dimensions: monitoring and metrics, failure mode analysis, technical debt, emergency response, performance optimization, change management, microservices rationalization, platform as a product, balanced team, and path to production. We'll explain how to address issues uncovered during a health check and provide recommendations on how to build a sustainable Day 2 app-ops reliability engineering practice.

A new .NET update is coming around. It will transform .NET development by providing features that should have been around a lot sooner! We can forgive the delay in this update given the fact that Microsoft is including the .NET Multi-Platform App UI (MAUI).
This new framework will aid developers who work mainly to develop mobile applications but also want other options open to them. A major benefit of using the MAUI is the ability to develop mobile applications that are no longer platform-dependent.
Lattice: A Cloud-Native Platform for Your Spring ApplicationsMatt Stine
As presented at SpringOne2GX 2015 in Washington, DC.
Lattice is a cloud-native application platform that enables you to run your applications in containers like Docker, on your local machine via Vagrant. Lattice includes features like:
Cluster scheduling
HTTP load balancing
Log aggregation
Health management
Lattice does this by packaging a subset of the components found in the Cloud Foundry elastic runtime. The result is an open, single-tenant environment suitable for rapid application development, similar to Kubernetes and Mesos Applications developed using Lattice should migrate unchanged to full Cloud Foundry deployments.
Lattice can be used by Spring developers to spin up powerful micro-cloud environments on their desktops, and can be useful for developing and testing cloud-native application architectures. Lattice already has deep integration with Spring Cloud and Spring XD, and you’ll have the opportunity to see deep dives into both at this year’s SpringOne 2GX. This session will introduce the basics:

Consistent toolbox talks are critical for maintaining workplace safety, as they provide regular opportunities to address specific hazards and reinforce safe practices.
These brief, focused sessions ensure that safety is a continual conversation rather than a one-time event, which helps keep safety protocols fresh in employees' minds. Studies have shown that shorter, more frequent training sessions are more effective for retention and behavior change compared to longer, infrequent sessions.
Engaging workers regularly, toolbox talks promote a culture of safety, empower employees to voice concerns, and ultimately reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries on site.
The traditional method of conducting safety talks with paper documents and lengthy meetings is not only time-consuming but also less effective. Manual tracking of attendance and compliance is prone to errors and inconsistencies, leading to gaps in safety communication and potential non-compliance with OSHA regulations. Switching to a digital solution like Safelyio offers significant advantages.
Safelyio automates the delivery and documentation of safety talks, ensuring consistency and accessibility. The microlearning approach breaks down complex safety protocols into manageable, bite-sized pieces, making it easier for employees to absorb and retain information.
This method minimizes disruptions to work schedules, eliminates the hassle of paperwork, and ensures that all safety communications are tracked and recorded accurately. Ultimately, using a digital platform like Safelyio enhances engagement, compliance, and overall safety performance on site. https://safelyio.com/

Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

UI5con 2024 - Bring Your Own Design SystemPeter Muessig
How do you combine the OpenUI5/SAPUI5 programming model with a design system that makes its controls available as Web Components? Since OpenUI5/SAPUI5 1.120, the framework supports the integration of any Web Components. This makes it possible, for example, to natively embed own Web Components of your design system which are created with Stencil. The integration embeds the Web Components in a way that they can be used naturally in XMLViews, like with standard UI5 controls, and can be bound with data binding. Learn how you can also make use of the Web Components base class in OpenUI5/SAPUI5 to also integrate your Web Components and get inspired by the solution to generate a custom UI5 library providing the Web Components control wrappers for the native ones.
