Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon. On July 20, 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon and walk on its surface, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit. Armstrong's first words after stepping onto the Moon were "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
