Defintion
■ According to Edward (2011), negotiated curriculum is a process where the
teachers and students negotiate about what is taught and learnt without
letting the teachers making the decisions alone.
■ Kath Murdoch (2006) stated that negotiated curriculum refers to process of
teachers empowering students by allowing then to speak out during the
classroom discussion and doing the basic learning and teaching activities in the
classroom as well.
■ According to Knowles (1998), negotiated curriculum is a catalyst to arise
learner self direction, motivation and takes count of individual differences.
Our own understanding:
■ Based on our understanding, negotiated curriculum gives opportunities to students on how to
design their own learning.
■ It gives them the right to negotiate with their teachers and having a win-win situation.
■ Besides, negotiated curriculum allows the students to learn and explore at their own but also they
will be getting a help and guidance from their teacher in order to go through the learning and
teaching process.
■ In addition, negotiated curriculum occured when the syllabus is negotiated with the learner, and
the teacher is seen as a curriculum developer where it is also encourage and empower learners to
become autonomous.
■ It is also providing a variety of learning experiences develop from learners’ interests.
