Nea Smyrni is a suburb of Athens that was settled in 1922 by Greek refugees from Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) after the city was burned down. The refugees built their new community, Nea Smyrni, in resemblance to their original home of Smyrna, establishing churches, schools, and athletic organizations with similar names. Today, Nea Smyrni is a residential town of about 100,000 people that maintains connections to its history through cultural institutions from Smyrna.
