CCCOER Presents: Regional Leaders of Open EducationUna Daly
When: Wednesday, March 4, noon PST/3pm EST:
Launched in fall 2019, the Regional Leadership for Open Education (RLOE) initiative was inspired by CCCOER members’ growing need to collaborate across institutional and state boundaries to find solutions for issues impacting OER adoption at diverse, multi-institution systems. Many open education leaders face similar issues of advocacy and implementation beyond their home institution and wish for the opportunity to craft common solutions and eliminate duplication of efforts. Leaders from colleges, universities, library consortia, and government agencies were invited to participate in four workgroups to discuss and build solutions. Each workgroup has developed a focus project for pursuing in 2020 and will share early efforts and invite community feedback
Policy & Strategy: focusing on a bibliography of open education policies and building a video repository of statewide OER policy clips.
Stewardship: focusing on emerging frameworks for stewardship of open education resources and student privacy and data.
Professionalism: focusing on building a matrix of emerging “open education” roles and their associated competencies to better identify training needs.
Sustainability: focusing on building a virtual file cabinet of higher education infrastructure documents/templates integrating open education.
Featured Speakers:
Denise Cote, Reference Librarian, College of DuPage
James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning, College of the Canyons
Amy Hofer, Coordinator, Statewide Open Education Library Services, Open Oregon
Quill West, Open Education Project Manager, Pierce College District
Lisa Young, Faculty Director, Center for Teaching & Learning, Scottsdale Community College

Innovation in Teaching Adult Education:
Using a Skills-Based Plan
Facilitators:
Dr. Jeffrey Mrizek
Dr. Paul De La Cerda
Innovation doesn’t happen of its own accord. The difficult times in which we live require an innovative,
creative, and hopeful approach of adult education. Creative changes are driven by leaders with vision
and skills to nurture a culture with a predisposition to innovate—even in the context of a community
college that might be change adverse. This presentation shows a nontraditional, experiential,
“empathy-invoking” approach to the teaching of a skills-based plan for adult learners. Learn about
approaches from college leaders who build a safe learning community using a familiar “knowledgebased curriculum” and a structured “theory-to-practice” program of online learning activities. We
invited several experts to share insights about factors, qualities, and strategies that help educators
and colleges innovate. Learn how leaders operationalize a culture of innovation that changes attitudes
and changes lives through adult education using Career Choices and Changes.

Educators play a critical role in improving the lives of their students, and this is especially true for educators for the TESOL field in the United States. With an increasingly diverse student population and a changing educational paradigm that has a greater emphasis on academic proficiency, the expertise of the TESOL field in the U.S. is needed now more than ever. However, despite these changing conditions, the needs of English learners and the knowledge and expertise of the TESOL field remains in many cases under the radar.
Whether it’s advocating for their students, their programs, or themselves, the need for action by TESOL educators is clear. To be most effective, educators must seek out ways to shape the policies that impact their programs, their jobs, and their students’ lives.
