Editor's Notes

  1. The purpose of this slide is to showcase the building to students as they come into the room and sit down/get settled.
  2. The purpose of this slide is to allow the presenter introduce herself/himself, thank the career guidance teacher for the invitation and inform students how long the presentation will last, what will be covered and the desired format for asking questions.
  3. Many people may not have heard of NCI, start by asking the class have they any brothers/sisters/friends who have come to NCI. If yes do they know what course their friend/relative is covering ? Explain why they may not have heard of us ie. name change, enlargement, new location.
  4. Students generally have not heard of the IFSC so an explaination about our location and how easy it is to get here is important. Most students have been to the Point Depot for a concert so can link the Point Depot with our location.
  5. Purpose of this slide is to introduce students briefly to the courses which NCI offer and the areas which the presentation. Expain you will go into the careers, jobs and the courses relevant to each area in more detail ilater in the presentation.
  6. Not all students will be interested in the areas which we are promoting. There are a number of points which students should look into before they choose their course/college on their CAO form. These points are relevant to all types of colleges/courses and are selling points for NCI. The first point relates to 'free fees v's private colleges'. Explain that when a students sees a course they are interested in they should check if it is covered under the free fees iniative. Explain the costs of private college per year v's colleges within the free fees system. Explain that NCI is not a private college we fall under the free fees initiative and applications are made via the CAO. Private Fees = 3,000-4,000 per year Free Fees = aprox 700 per year in admin costs
  7. Many 3rd level institutions will not accept a student unless they have a second language eg. English + spanish/french/german. Let students know to look out for this requirement before making their decision. NCI does not ask that you have a second language. All students must achieve a minimum of a pass in pass level english but a second language is not required.
  8. The third point relates to work experience. Work experience has become extremly important to employers and students who graduate with degrees will find it difficult to gain employment if they have not had any previous work experience. So it is really important that they try their best to gain work experience in their study area before leaving college. Some colleges organise a work placement for students and in NCI all students gain work experience prior to leaving college. Our placement officer organises work placement either in second year or 4th year. (second year for hr/acc/bus/fin students and 3rd year for IT students.
  9. The 4th point relates to semesters and continual assessment. The students you are talking to will not understand what this means as they have only been used to the school system. Explain that continual assessment benefits them as their year is broken into two with exams at christmas and in May, this means less cramming etc. Explain the benifits of continual assessment. Let them now that they should check to see if this is offered before deciding on a college and that NCI offers continual assessment and semesters.
  10. NCI's degree points requirements fall below those of universities but above the points required by the IT's.
  11. The sixth point relates to location. Explain that no-one will be checking their attendance at college and it is up to the student to get out of bed and attend class. Students should make it as easy on themselves as possible to attend class . Attendance can sometimes count for a percentage of exam marks so is important. NCI is easy to get to for most students.
  12. The seventh point relates to accommodation and is relevant mostly to students outside of Dublin. Only use this slide if students want to hear about the accommodation. NCI guarentees accommodation to first years, cost of accommodation per week is 120.00 Euro for a private room with ensuite and private study area. All students share a common living room and kitchen. The cost is quite high compared to other campus accommodation due to the location (dublin city centre), private rooms and en-suites + campus security. The benifit is however being able to roll out of bed, cross the quad and be in college within 2 minutes of waking up.
  13. At this point the presentation has covered in general who NCI are, where we are located, the courses we offer and important points to remember. The presentation now moves into more detail on the two schools within NCI and the courses offered. Inform the students that the college is broken down into two schools, explain that the term ' informatics' is the term used to describe IT/computers by third level colleges. This slide introduces the school of business and the 2 certificate courses and shows that thay are at level 6 on the national qualification framework (NQF).
  14. Honsours degree courses in the school of business are introduced here and are shown at level 8 on the NQF. Explain that once you complete a certificate programme you can move into year 2 of a degree course thus moving up the NQF.
  15. This slide introduces the school of informatics certificate course at level 6.
  16. This slide introduces our new degree in Business and Technology which is at level 7 of the NQF. This was designed to meet the growing demand for business students with very high standards of IT knowledge.
  17. This slide introduces the hons degrees in computing, explain again that compleation of a certificate will allow you move up into year 2 of the degree.
  18. This slide now allows you to choose which area you want to speak on in more detail.
  19. Provide general information on student life in college
