The BJP-led NDA won 353 of 542 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, with the BJP alone winning 303 seats. The BJP saw significant gains in vote share compared to previous elections, winning 37% of the national vote, the highest for any single party in over 25 years. The BJP expanded its support beyond its traditional base to gain more support from other backward classes, scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes across India. Prime Minister Modi's focus on social programs and direct transfers to beneficiaries helped the BJP overcome a stronger opposition. National pride and an inspiring leader in Modi were also cited as reasons for the BJP's success.
