Last 3 paychecks? But I just moved
✅ Paychecks from other countries / past jobs are fine too
✅ If there's gaps, provide a bank account summary
✅ Have a job? provide the employment contract too
✅ German family or friends? Consider a guarantor (Bürgschaftserklärung, extra doc)

Last 3 paychecks? But I'm not even working
✅ You may need to pay 3-6 months rent upfront
✅ Provide a bank account summary, also other countries
✅ German family or friends? Consider a guarantor (Bürgschaftserklärung, extra doc)

Schufa? Your credit score in Germany
✅ Only need positive, no real numerical score
✅ But I just moved? No history, is still something
✅ Provide a credit rating from your home country
✅ No credit score at all? Bank account summary

Schufa? You can get one for free!
Schufa is obliged to give you 1 free credit score per
year. Google 'Schufa kostenloser Credit Score' or click
here
Other sites charge up to
30 euros! And Schufa
tries to sell you a
unnecessary premium
package

Schufa likes personal data, but will make things faster
To get your credit score you
have to enter your personal
information.
A credit score is very personal
data. Thus, Schufa will make
sure that it's really you
requesting the data.
Uploading your passport is
only optional but will make
the process faster.

Mietschuldenfreiheitsbescheinigung?
A recommendation letter from your past landlord
✅ No fixed format. Even via email is fine
✅ Basically, new landlords want to know that you used
to be a good tenant to your past landlord
✅ They want to know that you don’t owe your own
landlord money
✅ Can also be from abroad. Even from your parents
16. 16Strictly private and confidential
Bürgschaftserklärung (guarantor)
✅ If you have little or no income you can ask someone, normally
family, to be liable in case you do not pay your rent on time or break
something in the apt
✅ Landlords are not allowed to take a deposit and ask for
guarantor
✅ Make sure the liability/guarantee is limited to a few month rent

Insurance? Haftpflicht, Hausrat, sometimes both
● Sometimes required, generally improves your
chance to get an apartment
● Haftpflicht? Private liability insurance
Protects the landlords things inside the house if you
cause accidental damage. especially relevant for
furnished rentals
● Hausrat? Home contents insurance
Protects the things you own inside the house against
fire, water, storm, theft. Some landlords want you to
have it so you can’t blame them if something
happens.
