On August 3, 2015 the US EPA finalized the Clean Power Plan (CPP), which requires states to reduce carbon emissions from power plants using a variety of strategies, including Combined Heat and Power (CHP). The US EPA gave states a great amount of flexibility in how to meet carbon reduction goals, creating an opportunity for the state to take advantage of Ohio's great CHP potential.
As Ohio moves forward with developing a state plan, this webinar will examine precisely how the Clean Power Plan treats CHP and what options the state has to include CHP as a carbon-reducing strategy. Webinar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of presenters and review presentation materials after the conclusion of the webinar.
Recently, Dayton Power & Light (DP&L) launched a CHP-specific incentive under the electric utility’s custom rebate program, per the policy established by Governor Kasich’s 21st Century Energy Initiative (Ohio Senate Bill 315). This presentation features DP&L energy efficiency program staff who provide details on the program incentive that is available to customers of Dayton Power & Light. Additionally, facilitators of the Ohio Coalition for Combined Heat and Power provide a state policy update.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to examine the increasing economic feasibility of algae biofuels. Algae can be grown in places where traditional crops cannot be grown and it consumes carbon dioxide, thus making it better than traditional sources of biofuels. It can also be harvested every 10 days thus making its oil yield per acre 200 times higher than corn and 40 times higher than sunflowers. The problem is that harvesting and extracting the algae requires large amounts of labor and energy (drying) and the algae may damage surrounding eco-systems. Thus new and better processes along with large scale production are needed to solve these problems. These slides discuss the various approaches (open pond, photo-bioreactor, fermentation), their advantages and disadvantages, their existing and future costs, and other improvements that are driving steadily falling costs. In the short term, algae will continue to be used in niche applications such as cosmetics, food, and fertilizers. In the long run, as the cost reductions continue, algae might become a major source of fuel for transportation and other applications.

DSM and POET, LLC, one of the world's largest ethanol producers, announce a joint venture on 23 January to commercially demonstrate and license cellulosic bio-ethanol, the next step in the development of biofuels, based on their proprietary and complementary technologies.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

The cellulosic industry has made visible progress in commercialization, with commercial-size, pioneer production facilities reaching construction completion and commissioning phases. Stability in the RFS is crucial at the present stage.EPA’s proposed rule has done damage, chilling investment in the sector.First generation ethanol and biodiesel production capacity provides infrastructure for next-generation technologies. It also provides supply chain logistics for residues and other cellulosic feedstocks. EPA’s proposal to put the RFS on a (quote-unquote) “manageable trajectory” should trigger an assessment of the impact on a range of economic and environmental measurements.
BIO recently published an analysis of the impact of EPA’s proposal on greenhouse gas emissions. We built on a recent analysis by Michael Wang of Argonne National Labs, which found that the GHG emission profile of biofuels are rapidly improving as technology improves. But the environmental impact of U.S. petroleum use continues to get worse – as the US relies more and more on Canadian oil sands. So our major finding is that if more of the US petroleum fuel mix comes from Canadian oil sands – which is what will happen with the proposed changes to the RFS -- the resulting increase in GHG emissions will be unavoidable. Because the RFS is the only Congressionally authorized greenhouse gas reduction program, EPA cannot afford backsliding.
