11. EXPOSITION
Setting (time/place)
The Pursuit of Happyness, which is set in San Francisco in 1981.
Main character introduction
In this movie, an African-American man named Chris Gardner,
abandoned by his father as an infant, vows that he will always be present
in the life of his son Christopher.
Theme
Rags to riches, the story tells about a poor man who through hard work
and determination makes his way to the top a broker firm
12. RISING ACTION
Plot
Tired of Chris's professional failures, his wife decides to separate, leaving
him financially broke with an unpaid internship in a brokerage firm and his
son's custody to deal with.
Point of View
In the movie it is 1st person point of view the story is being told by the
main character Chris Gardner.
Conflicts in the movie includes:
problems with his wife

Chris getting his scanner stolen
13. FALLING ACTION
Climax
The moment of highest emotional intensity within a plot.
The climax of the movie is when Chris, played by will
smith, is called into the firms office and finds out he got
the job after working and competing for several weeks.
14. RESOLUTION AND SYMBOLISM
He starts to sell more machines and gets back on his feet. He finally
gets the job as a stockbroker and later earns millions of dollars.
Symbolism
The symbolism in the movie is in the title "The Pursuit of Happyness", the
"Y". The movie takes place in 1981 and the economy is lousy, Chris the
main character is taking his son to day care when he sees on the window
that happiness is spelled with a "Y" this is a symbol of all things mediocre
15. THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS
The Motivation
Chris Gardner speaks with a wealthy broker and imagines why he couldn't
be successful and happy as well.

The pursuit
After failing to pick up his son from day care, Chris's wife decides to
leave him, which causes Chris to ponder whether a life of happiness is
actually attainable.

The Determination
After spending the night in jail for unpaid parking tickets, Chris is forced to
run straight to his prestigious interview in dirty plain cloths.
Despite his appearance, he impresses the interviewers and land an internship.
He will be amongst 20 interns competing for a paid position as a broker.
18. THE JOURNEY
Without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment
and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even
behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom.
20. THE BELIEF
At one point, Chris tells his son that he will probably not very good
at basketball and that he shouldn't spend too much time on the
court. His son is understandably upset.
Chris, who has seen his own dream scatter over the years realizes
that instead of discouraging his son, he should teach him to protect
his dreams.
21. THE HAPPYNESS (CONCLUSION)
After months of living homeless and struggling through grueling
internship, Chris Gardner is offered the sole position at his brokage
firm.
Gardner went on to form his own multi-million dollar brokage firm
after some time.
