SPECIAL PROTECTION GROUP (SPG)
• Special Protection Group, with about 3000 personnel, is used for the protection of VVIPs
such as the Prime Minister.
• The Special Protection Group provides proximate security to VVIPs and the members of their
immediate family
• The SPG is divided broadly into the following four categories:
Operations : Looks after the actual protection duties. In the Operations Branch, there are
components like the Communications Wing, Technical Wing and Transport Wing.
Training : Deals with the training of personnel on a continuous basis. The SPG imparts
training in physical efficiency, firing, anti-sabotage checks, communication and other
operative aspects connected with close protection drills and having a bearing on VVIP
security with a view to maintaining a high level of physical fitness and to fine-tune the
operational skills of SPG Officers.

Intelligence & Tours : Looks after the threat assessment, internal intelligence pertaining to
personnel, verification of character and antecedents, tours and other allied jobs.
Administration:Deals with personnel, procurement and other related matters.The Special Protection

India for "providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Minister of
India and members of their immediate families (wife, husband, children and parents)".
• Annual budget -₹ 408.98 crore
• The SPG is also likely to have the Air India One, the call-sign of any aircraft carrying the Prime
Minister of India, to suit the security assessment and travel needs of Narendra Modi who is known
to be a frequent traveler for work purposes.
PM’S BMW XSERIES!
• The custom- made BMW XSeries is a 4,799- cc sports utility vehicle (SUV) with two engines and
eight cylinders.
• The hatchback is bulletproof, mineproof and carries an armour plating.
• The virtually armoured cars carry secure phone and on- board monitor with TV function.
• They guzzle a litre of petrol for about every seven kilometres.
• The basic model costs Rs.78.60 lakh.
• Customised versions can cost up to Rs.15 crore, depending upon the security features.
• The government has ordered for 15 of these vehicles.
• Four have already been delivered.
• Around nine cars are expected to be in Modi's cavalcade apart from a unit of bomb squad vehicle.
• Out of these at least two are likely to be identical BMWs to act as decoys and another five BMWs and
others for the escorts.
NATIONAL SECURITY GUARD (NSG)
• The National Security Guard (NSG) is an elite high-profile counter-terrorism
and special operations tactical unit in India created by the Cabinet Secretariat
under the National Security Guard Act of the Indian Parliament in 1986.
• It works completely within the Central Armed Police Forces structure.
• The NSG is an elite force providing a second line of defence to the nation.
• They have played a pivotal role in safeguarding the unity of India and have
commendably foiled attempts of anti-national elements to tear apart the social
fabric of the country.
• The NSG has maintained an edge over terrorist outfits in possession of latest
technology and are considered among the finest special operations units in all
of Asia.
NARENDRA MODI
• Born -17 September 1950 (age 63) Vadnagar, India.
• Narendra Damodardas Modi is an Indian politician and the designated Prime Minister of India,
due to be sworn in on 26 May 2014.
• Modi, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.
• Modi was a key strategist for the BJP in the successful 1995 and 1998 Gujarat state election
campaigns.
• He became Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 and served longer by far in that position
than anyone else to date.
• He was a major campaign figure in the 2009 general election, which the BJP led National
Democratic Alliance lost to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
• He led the BJP into the April–May 2014 general election, winning the second-largest majority in
the history of the Lok Sabha.
LATEST INFORMATION REGARDING SECURITY OF PM MODI
• Narendra Modi's wife and mother will also get the Special Protection Group (SPG) security soon after he takes
oath as India's 14th prime minister on 26 May, security officials said.
• Around 1,000 Black Cat commandos will be deployed at Modi's official residence at 7, Race Course, his office
in South Block after he takes oath on 26 May.
• Over 500 men of the Special Protection Group (SPG) could be deployed to guard Narendra Modi, who will
enjoy the tightest security cover ever, once he takes over as the prime minister.
• Modi as PM will have a bigger convoy than Manmohan Singh, primarily due to the heightened threat
perception.
• To better understand how Gujarat police handled the security of Modi, a team of the SPG has gone to
Gandhinagar. "The SPG will formally take over the security only after Modi is sworn in as the PM.
• The SPG, with a budget of Rs. 408 crore in the current fiscal for a staff of less than 4,000 personnel, has the
highest man-budget ratio among all security forces in the country.
